2 men killed hours apart in separate Birmingham shootings now identified

Authorities have released the names of two men killed in separate Birmingham shootings hours apart on Wednesday.

Birmingham police on Thursday identified the victims as Isiah Tyson Anthony, 26, and Tyrone Dewayne Hendrix, 27.

Anthony, who family said was expecting his first child in the coming months, was found unresponsive just after 5 p.m. in the 1700 block of Laurel Avenue S.W.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Pronounced him dead on the scene.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said the preliminary investigation suggests the victim was involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown suspect before the fatal shots were fired. The suspect was gone by the time officers got at the shooting site.

A second person showed up at UAB Hospital a short time later. Wade said officers did not know if that shooting was related to the one on Laurel Avenue.

Multiple people gathered nearby waiting to find out of it was their loved one shot, including the victim’s sister and they mother of his unborn child. They stood outside the yellow crime scene tape distraught, crying and praying as they awaited confirmation.

Less than six hours later, South Precinct officers responded about 10:40 p.m. to a call of gunfire and people running in Brother Bryan Park on Magnolia Avenue.

Officers arrived to find Hendrix in the northwest corner of the park, closest to 21st Street and 10th Avenue South.

Witnesses reported hearing shots fired and saw people running away from the park, but they did not see the actual shooting, Wade said. They called 911.

It’s possible that the people witnesses saw running from the park were the suspects, she said.

No arrests have been made.

The deadly shootings marked Birmingham’s 114th and 115th homicide this year. Of those, eight have been ruled justifiable and two happened in previous years and died in 2024.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 147 homicides including the 115 in Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
