Sky pundit loving what Arteta’s done with midfielder at Arsenal

Paul Davis has praised Mikel Arteta for handing 15-year-old Ethan Nwaneri his Premier League debut for Arsenal, as he told Sky Sports.

On Sunday, as Arsenal sat top of the Premier League table, a rising star was the talk of the town, when Nwaneri became the youngest player in Premier League history at 15 years and 181 days.

Arsenal legend Davis shared that he was 17 when he first stepped into professional football and he thinks it’s a ‘fantastic achievement’ from the club’s latest rising star.

Nwaneri may have only got one touch of the football against Brentford, but it was historic and one that he and his family won’t forget.

It also just goes to show the faith Arteta has in his younger players because he is already building and working with a young squad at the Emirates.

Nonetheless, Davis, who was part of the successful Arsenal team of the ’80s and ’90s, was full of praise for Nwaneri after his historical debut.

“It’s amazing isn’t it,” said Davis. “A 15-year-old playing in this league and at this time is an amazing feat.

“I got in at 17 and that was young, back then all them years ago when I played. But 15 is an amazing achievement for him.

“And he’s only just over 15 as well. Fantastic achievement so far. I haven’t seen him play. I was at the game.

“But they must have so much faith in the young lad to put him on in that sort of situation.  Mentally he must be strong and, of course, he’s talented. Now, I am looking forward to seeing how his career develops. It makes you feel old.”

Understandably so, Nwaneri is now going to have a big spotlight on his head and he is a name that will be talked about for a long time.

There will be expectancy on his shoulders and this is where the young midfielder needs to be managed properly.

But Arsenal fans will back Arteta to do just that because the manner in which he has helped the likes of Gabriel Martinelli is proof that he can be trusted.

Plus, captain Martin Odegaard was a wonderkid himself, signing for Real Madrid at a young age, so he will understand what Nwaneri will be going through now.
