Body found in Joe Wheeler State Park likely that of missing UAH student

The driver’s license of a man reportedly missing for almost a month was found on the clothing of a body discovered Monday afternoon in Joe Wheeler State Park.

Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Investigator Lt. James DiStefano said the license of David Stann, 23, was found on the body. Stann has been missing from Athens since late September.

Stann’s car was discovered at the park on Monday, and the remains were found in a wooded area shortly after. Stann was reported as driving a 2017 black VW Jetta.

The body had apparently been in that location for some time, DiStefano said.

Authorities have not positively identified the body as being Stann.

The body was removed from the area later in the evening and taken to the Alabama Department of Forensics for an autopsy. It could be at least a week before preliminary autopsy results are available.

Stann, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering at UAH, was reportedly last seen on the morning of Sept. 22.
