Bicyclist dies after being hit by garbage truck in New Haven

A man was killed in the early morning hours Thursday when he was struck by a garbage truck while riding a bike in New Haven.

Emergency crews responded to the area of Church Street and North Frontage Road just before 2:10 a.m. on the report of a motor vehicle crash with “major injuries” involving a refuse truck and a bicyclist, according to Officer Christian Bruckhart of the New Haven Police Department.

Bruckhart said officers found the bicyclist, a 24-year-old New Haven man, suffering from serious injuries. He was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to Bruckhart. The man’s identity is being withheld until his family members have been notified.

No other injuries were reported.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene, Bruckhart said.

According to Bruckhart, a preliminary investigation indicated the bicyclist entered the road from a sidewalk during the collision. The crash remains under investigation by the police department’s Crash Reconstruction Team.

Any witnesses or individuals with information have been asked to call New Haven detectives at 203-946-6304 or the department’s anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
