Jerry Seinfeld with his observational comedy has several accolades throughout his life. Not only this, but he’s also the genius behind the NBC hit sitcom Seinfeld and played a fictionalized version of himself. The show ran for a remarkable nine seasons and also brought the comedian a lot of acclaim. But along with this, he’s also not new when it comes to sparking controversies.
In one such contentious moment, he blamed the extreme left for ruining the comedy genre. This was something that didn’t sit well with a lot of people. However, it seems that the comedian had a change of heart and has now apologized for his past comments.
Jerry Seinfeld Apologizes and Reverses Stance on Comedy’s Decline
Jerry Seinfeld brought Seinfeld out in the open and made it one of the most sought-after shows in the comedy genre. The sitcom had a remarkable run and also proved to be career-defining for the comedian as well. And while it ended all the way back in 1998, all thanks to the comedian, fans won’t be forgetting it anytime soon.
The actor was an absolute genius on the show, but outside in the real world, his statements have generated quite a lot of criticism. One of which was when he bashed the “extreme left” for ruining comedy.
For context: In April of this year, the comedian made a bold statement via The New Yorker that the fear of offending people was hindering the work of comedians. This was not all, and he also added:
You just expected, there’ll be some funny stuff we can watch on TV tonight. Well, guess what? Where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and PC crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people.
As soon as this statement of his was out in the open, fans had mixed reactions for the same. While some did agree that political correctness was hurting comedy, others mentioned that it was necessary for inclusivity and respect. But now the comedian has had a change of heart, and during an interview with Breaking Bread with Tom Papa regretted what he said earlier.
He said, “I don’t think, as I said, ‘the extreme left’ has done anything to inhibit the art of comedy. I’m taking that back officially.” Further, he acknowledged that the landscape of comedy is everchanging. And artists need to adapt to these changes in order to stay relevant. This statement by the comedian makes it seem like he’s trying to save himself from being alienated from the industry.

After dominating the sitcom genre in the 1990s, Seinfeld has left a long-lasting mark on the genre. And is also widely regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time. So, after its conclusion in 1998, fans were eager to know if there would be a reunion or a new series.
But much to the dismay of the fans, co-creator Jerry Seinfeld in an interview via The Howard Stern Show, made it clear that he has no intention to make comeback on TV. He further added “I don’t like seeing old people on TV. I don’t want to inflict myself on people in a deteriorated state.”
The comedian also added that the show had a perfect timing, which helped both him and co-creator Larry David to catch the true essence of the era. Further, that by creating anything today he doesn’t want to tarnish the legacy of the sitcom. Seinfeld said:
I’m not arrogant and stupid enough to think I did that, I know that I got caught in a, you know what we call, the perfect storm. The love affair between the people that were making the and the audience was so intense, so white hot, I had to respect that. I could not go to that point where it starts to age and wither.
All in all, it was the love that the viewers had for the show which compelled him to end the sitcom on a much natural note. Instead, of ruining a good thing by overstaying their welcome.
