The Social Security Agency will send an extra payment to some beneficiaries in November.
Recipients of Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will get next month’s first payment on Friday, Nov. 1. However, because the first of the month in December falls on a Sunday, those benefits will arrive on Friday, Nov. 29th, meaning two checks will arrive in November.
January 2025′s SSI payments will arrive on Tuesday, Dec. 31st due to the New Year’s Day holiday.
Some 7.5 million Americans receive SSI benefits each month. The benefits are paid to those who are 65 years old or older who have low or no income or younger people with a physical or mental disability.
The maximum SSI benefit is $943 a month.
Other Social Security changes
Normal Social Security payments will be on a regular schedule throughout the remainder of the year except for one change. Social Security recipients who were born between the 21st – 31st normally receive their checks on the fourth Wednesday of the month. In December, however, the payment will be made on the fourth Tuesday due to the Christmas holiday on Dec. 25th.
COLA
Some 72.5 million beneficiaries – 69 million Social Security and 7.5 million SSI recipients and some who receive both – will get a 2.5% Cost of Living Adjustment boost for next year. Social Security recipients will see an increase on January’s payments; SSI’s first higher payment will be on Dec. 31, 2024.
The increase is lower than the 3.2% beneficiaries received in 2024 but is close to the historical norm of 2.6% received in the past 20 years. During that time, COLAS have ranged from as low as 0 in 2010, 2011 and 2016 and as high as 8.7% in 2023.
The 2.5% increase means the average beneficiary receiving $1,870 per month will see an increase of about $46.80 next year.
