Week 8 Huntsville area Player of the Week scored all of his team’s touchdowns

The Week 8 Huntsville Times football Player of the Week scored all of his team’s touchdowns last week and he also ran away with the AL.com poll.

Wide receiver Trey Greenwell of Decatur wrapped up 76 percent of the 4,169 votes cast after his performance in a 28-21 loss to Mae Jemison. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior caught 8 passes for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns and ran for another score for the Red Raiders.

Greenwell is the first player from Decatur to finish atop the Player of the Week survey.

Sparkman quarterback Keaton Williams finished second in the balloting with 17 percent of the total. He threw for the game-tying touchdown and ran for the winning 2-point conversation as the Senators topped James Clemens 15-14. The 6-1, 195-pounder was 7-for-16 for 67 yards and a score and ran for 22 yards on 6 carries for Sparkman.

The Senators lost a 1-point game to James Clemens in 2023 after the Jets blocked the PAT kick that potentially would have tied the game with 6 seconds left in the game.

Quarterback Dax Varnadore of Fort Payne got 4 percent of the vote to finish third in the poll. Varnadore, a 6-0, 195-pounder, completed 13-of-18 passes for 144 yards and four touchdowns as the Wildcats beat Class 6A No. 7 Gadsden City 28-18. His TD passes went for 6 18, 15 and 8 yards. The senior also ran for 52 yards on 2 carries.

Watch for the weekly nominees on Sundays this fall and be sure to cast your vote each week.
