Check out early progress on South Alabama’s Stanky Field turf installation project

Work has begun to remove the natural grass and install artificial turf at Stanky Field, home of South Alabama baseball.

The $2 million project is scheduled to be complete for the 2025 season. In addition to new drainage and sub-surface work, the FieldTurf DoublePlay surface will be installed not just in the Stanky Field outfield and in foul territory but on the warning track and in the infield, on the pitcher’s mound and in both bullpens.

FieldTurf DoublePlay is in use at numerous college baseball stadiums, including Tennessee and Texas in the SEC and Southern Miss, Louisiana-Monroe, Texas State and James Madison in the Sun Belt Conference. Stanky Field has used a natural grass surface since it opened in 1980.

Mobile is one of the rainiest cities in America, and the Jaguars routinely have had to postpone home games not only because of inclement weather prior to and during games, but often the following day due to poor field conditions. The hope is that with the new turf, such postponements will become less frequent.
