More than 500 kinds of frozen waffles recalled over listeria risk

Citing listeria concerns, Dollar General, Target, Walmart, and over a dozen other national chains will be pulling frozen waffles off their shelves following a voluntary recall issued by manufacturer Treehouse Foods.

Routine testing at the manufacturing facility found listeria. As of Oct. 18 there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled products, according to a recent release from the company.

In the release, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised consumers to check their freezers for any of the products listed in the recall and dispose of them or return the recalled product to the place of purchase for credit. Anyone with questions may contact the company at 800-596-2903, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (CST), the release said.

Listeria, scientific name listeria monocytogenes, is “an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the FDA website.

“Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea,” the site reads. “Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
