There was a lot going on Saturday during “College GameDay” when the panel made its weekly picks. Masters champ Scottie Scheffler, as the guest picker, talked Louisville, Nick Saban had to choose between his two best coordinators and the show was split on Alabama -Tennessee.
“I think it is unfair to me that two of the best assistant coaches who contributed greatly to our program and the success we had at Alabama, (Texas coach and former Alabama OC Steve Sarkisian) Sark and (Georgia coach and former Alabama DC) Kirby (Smart), that I would have to pick one over the other. So I’m flipping a coin: Texas.
It was clean sweep for the Longhorns as Desmond Howard, Saban, Pat McAfee, Scheffler and Corso went with Texas. Kirk Herbstreit didn’t make a pick.
Meanwhile, Scheffler, who was rocking his green Masters jacket, couldn’t help by make a comment about his time in Louisville during the pick for the Miami-Louisville game.
“Not to bring anything personal into this with Louisville,” he said. “Great city. Love the people, but I think Miami is going to smoke them.
Scheffler was arrested in May on his way to the PGA Championship, with stunning images showing him handcuffed as he was taken to jail for not following police orders during a pedestrian fatality investigation.
In a span of four hours, the top-ranked golfer in the world was arrested wearing gym shorts and a T-shirt, dressed in an orange jail shirt for his mug shot, stretched in a jail cell to stay loose and returned to Valhalla Golf Club dressed and ready for his 10:08 a.m. tee time.
Louisville Metro Police Department said Scheffler was booked on four charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer after his vehicle dragged an officer to the ground.
The charges were later dropped.
He joked about it Saturday.
“Jail is a touch boring,” he said about stretching in the cell. “There is nothing. Just staring at the walls.”
Meanwhile, the panel was split on the Third Weekend in October.
“Alabama still hovering in that abyss,” Howard said. “I’m going Tennessee.”
Pat McAfee said “Tennessee gets a massive win. They are top-10 next week with a win over Alabama.”
Herbstreit points to Neyland Stadium.
“We keep waiting for Tennessee’s vertical pass game,” he said. “… I think the home-field is the difference. Tough to go into Neyland Stadium. … Vols find a way at home.”
Saban, who has yet to pick against Alabama, disagreed.
“I know this is a tough game. Tennessee is a tough place to play, but I got to go Bama,” he said.
Scheffler agreed.
“I think Alabama coming off two close games the past two weeks, they right the ship and get it done on the road,” Scheffler said.
Corso said, “Alabama outscores Tennessee. Alabama wins.”
