In 2023, Austin Butler came pretty close to nabbing his first Oscar win, thanks to his immaculate portrayal of the King of Rock and Roll. But despite taking the Golden Globe accolade home, the actor ended up losing to Brendan Fraser in the race for Best Action at the 95th Academy Awards. With Dune 2 becoming one of the most acclaimed releases of the year, it seems The Bikeriders might be getting his second shot at the accolade.
But given the success of Dune 2, Warner Bros. is once again pushing the Hollywood heartthrob for next year’s Oscars, and it’s easy to see why.
Austin Butler Might Finally Inch Towards the Oscar Glory
In recent years, Austin Butler has cemented himself as one of the leading stars in Hollywood, and for all the right reasons. With the Awards season approaching, he’s once again on the frontline, thanks to his portrayal of the wicked Feyd-Rautha in Dune 2. According to reports, his name is set to be submitted for next year’s Oscars for the Best Supporting Actor category, which hardly comes as a surprise.
Considering that villainous roles have often been a hit among the Academy, including RDJ in Oppenheimer, and Dune 2 star Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men, Butler’s chances seem more than promising.
Angela Bassett Resonated With Austin Butler’s Oscar Loss
Given that Elvis earned Austin Butler his first nod at the Academy, his loss at the 95th Academy Awards deeply resonated with Wakanda Forever star Angela Bassett. Keeping in mind that the actress sustained a loss in the Best Supporting Actress category on the same night, Bassett recalled holding Butler’s hand to console him after his name wasn’t announced for Best Actor.
On the evening of the Oscars, with Austin seated next to me, I understood intimately what he felt when it was time to learn if he would climb those stairs to the stage. So, I  took his hand and held it softly as the winner was announced. Although his name wasn’t called, Austin is no less a winner. The time had come for Austin to say goodbye to Elvis as he began to embrace an infinite universe of possibilities as an actor. I can’t wait to see what he brings us next.
But Butler is not the lone frontrunner from Dune 2 ahead of the Awards season, as it’s safe to say both the leads, Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, alongside Rebecca Ferguson, will be eying for the Oscar glory.
Dune: Part Two is available to stream on Max.
