How to Beat Esgar, Priest of Blood

This guide will show you how to beat Esgar, Priest of Blood. The game developers of FromSoftware decided to add a few extra optional bosses for the Tarnished to face in their journey to become the next Elden Lord. Fortunately, Esgar does not pose much of a challenge.

Despite being a weaker optional boss, players should not walk into the arena underestimating their opponent or without a plan. This guide will teach you the fastest way to defeat this boss without breaking much of a sweat and a few secret methods to end the fight sooner.

Where Can You Find Esgar, Priest of Blood?

How to Beat Esgar, Priest of Blood
Elden Ring players will struggle to find this boss rather than fighting him.

The Tarnished can find Esgar, Priest of Blood, beneath the dungeons of Leyndell, Royal Capital. The game developers of FromSoftware designed the Lands Between to be a massive playground for Elden Ring players, and this specific part of the map stood out.

Players will have a much harder time reaching this boss than fighting him. The tricky part will be navigating the Leyndell Catacombs, especially when each level is nearly identical making it easy to get lost or a nuisance to retrace steps.

The gist of reaching the arena is descending onto the Subterranean Shunning Grounds. Eventually, players will come across a Site of Grace leading to a stairwell with a fog wall.

How to Prepare to Fight Esgar, Priest of Blood?

Esgar, Priest of Blood is relatively easy to defeat with the right gear.

Every Soulslike boss has a weakness, and the player base must discover it to gain the upper hand. It is worth noting that Esgar is susceptible to attacks related to lightning and fire. Elden Ring players can equip the Blasphemous Blade and spam the two-handed attack to deploy a massive pillar of fire toward Esgar and remove a giant chunk of the health bar.

Tip

The Tarnished should immediately summon a Spirit Ash with a strong defense to distract Esgar, Priest of Blood.

It would be wise to face this optional boss with a level higher than 70 to improve a player’s chances of winning. Esgar, Priest of Blood, is aggressive and has a handful of attacks that can be quite deadly; however, most of these are easy to evade or counter.

Esgar will charge toward players to inflict blood loss with his daggers, and players can roll backward to avoid sustaining damage. Once players are beyond the reach of his melee attacks, Esgar will throw his daggers, and players can dodge to their left or right.

  • Blasphemous Blade
  • Rotten Breath
  • Dragon King’s Cragblade

Elden Ring players should summon a Spirit Ash built like a tank to distract Esgar and take the most damage. While the boss is distracted, the Tarnished can use Rotten Breath to inflict Scarlet Rot and use a shield to protect themselves from incoming attacks while the Spirit Ash regains their attention.

Rotten Breath is one of the most underrated incantations and can end a fight before it gets tense. Other optional bosses like the Dragonkin Soldier from the Siofra River stood no chance after being exposed to Rotten Breath and were defeated in a few minutes.

Alternatively, players can use lightning or fire-based weapons like the Bolt of Gransax or the Blasphemous Blade; however, this will put players at risk of taking damage. The Rotten Breath strategy will only require players to summon an ally for distraction, then inflict Scarlet Rot and survive until the health bar drops to zero.

Esgar, Priest of Blood, is a formidable foe but not as challenging as other bosses. Players will receive 30,000 runes and the Lord of Blood’s exultation for their efforts.
