Jay-Z and Kanye West used to be very close friends to the point that they treated each other as brothers. However, an old feud resulted in a rift between the rap industry icons which left a huge strain on their relationship, both personally and professionally.
Their controversy, which started around 2016 to 2017, got even worse after Kanye decided to include Jay-Z’s family in his public rant. Fans know that the latter could take any attack on him, but not when it involves Beyonce and their kids.
What Was the Controversial Kanye West and Jay-Z Feud All About?
Back in November 2016, Kanye West delivered a rant live on stage about Jay-Z and Beyonce, accusing the latter of refusing to show up at the MTV Awards unless allegedly her own song Formation wins at the event.
The rapper, whose real name is Shawn Corey Carter, told Elliott Wilson and Brian ‘B.Dot’ Miller on the Rap Radar podcast that they could have settled the issue in private but West chose to make it public. Not only that, but Jay-Z accused him of crossing the line. He also remarked how they never let disagreements grow as bad as what they had. The Empire State of Mind singer was clearly disappointed.
You got hurt, because this guy was talking about you on a stage, but what really hurt me, you can’t bring my kid or my wife into it. Like, Kanye is my little brother.
It broke Jay-Z’s heart to see the person he called brother talk to him and his wife in such a manner on stage. He said they had resolved past dilemmas like they always did, but for this one, he would not let it slide. “We’ve gotten past bigger issues, but you brought my family into it,” he warned.
This was the first time he said anything about the issue after West’s striking comments. Jay-Z admitted the controversy took a toll on his mental health which resulted in his canceling the rest of his Saint Pablo tour to check himself in a rehab.
Their falling out as friends was one of the biggest controversies in the industry at the time, although it seems like they have made peace with the past and are now on good terms.

In 2019, Kanye and Jay-Z were seen attending Diddy’s 50th birthday, and paparazzi caught them greeting each other and taking snaps. This evidently shows that they have buried the hatchet and are now on good terms.
