AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new list from Texas Monthly ranked eight Austin taquerias among the best tacos in the Lone Star State.
The list, released Monday, ranked the “50 Best Tacos in Texas” after Texas Monthly’s taco editor José R. Ralat visited over 400 taquerias across Texas. He judged tacos based on craft, quality, creativity and flavor, according to Texas Monthly.
Among the top 10 taquerias is Nixta Taqueria in east Austin. The restaurant describes itself as a mix between traditional Mexican food and “the unconventional.” Their best taco is the enchilada potosina, according to the list.
Austin had the second-most tacos listed among Texas cities behind San Antonio, which had 10 best taco nods.

- Con Todo: bistec estilo matamoros
- Cuantos Tacos: suadero
- Discada: discada
- El Paso Flauta: the number two
- Ramen del Barrio: lengua yaki-taco
- Suerte: chocotaco
- Yellow Bell Tacos: lamb
Where are the best tacos in Texas? The list’s top tacos are scattered across the state in Mission, El Paso, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin. The list’s top 10 taquerias are:

- Elemi, just outside El Paso
- Azteca Taco House, Houston
- Revolver Taco Lounge, Dallas
- Taqueria El Tiger, El Paso
- Taconeta, El Paso
- Papalo Taqueria, Houston
- Stixs & Stone, San Antonio
- Maskaras Mexican Grill, Dallas
- Nixta Taqueria, Austin
Several Austin taco spots have gained national attention as the best tacos in the state.
In September, Yelp named Cuantos Tacos as the best taco in the state based on reviews and ratings. Two years before, three Austin taco joints made Yelp’s best 100 taco spots in the country.
