Developed by Cloud Imperium Games(CIG), the minds behind Star Citizen, Squadron 42 is a long-awaited single-layer title that’s been under development for over a decade at this point. The addition of such big Hollywood names has undoubtedly added even more to the hype.

At last weekend’s CitizenCon, thousands of gamers flocked to Manchester, UK, to find out what’s coming for the future of Cloud Imperium Games’ Star Citizen. As a part of that incredible showcase, gamers were given a gameplay trailer for the spin-off Squadron 42.

CIG boss Chris Roberts, known for giving us the Wing Commander series, took to the stage and revealed that Squadron 42 will feature 30-40 hours of gameplay.

His comments were then followed up with a lengthy demo combining in-game footage and cinematics, which, although packed with bugs and crashes, did give fans a good clue about the upcoming game.

The demo also highlighted the involvement of Hollywood names such as Henry Cavil as Ryan Enright, Gary Oldman as Admiral Ernst Bishop, and Mark Strong as Captain Thomas Wade. All of these actors’ digital avatars were smoothly integrated into the game.

The performance was delivered through cutscenes or action sequences, boosting the cinematic feel of the sci-fi title. There’s no doubt that the addition of such a stellar cast has multiplied the game’s anticipation by ten times.

When is Squadron 42 Releasing?

Squadron 42 looks to be a promising game, but it’s going to be a while before it hits the shelves. On the game’s release date, Roberts and his team said on stage that they are quite “confident” that the game will arrive sometime in 2026, so gamers will be waiting for at least a year before getting their hands on the final version of the game.

However, we can’t forget the game’s past missed deadlines. Initially, this game was expected to launch in the summer of 2020. However, in 2022, CIG stated that the game was still one or two years away from a full release.

It’s been 12 long years since the game’s development kicked off, as it was announced way back on October 10th, 2012, together with Star Citizen and the launch of its crowdfunding campaign.

Even the CIG’s main project, Star Citizen, still doesn’t have a release date despite the fact that it has raised over $790 million in crowdfunding since the original Kickstarter. Let’s hope Roberts and his team finally stick to their planned release dates; otherwise, the future isn’t looking too bright for CIG.

With that said, what do you think about Henry Cavill and Gary Oldman’s role in CIG’s upcoming sci-fi game? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
