Former South Alabama star Caullin Lacy opts out of season at Louisville

Former South Alabama star Caullin Lacy has opted out of the remainder of the 2024 season at Louisville, according to multiple reports.

Lacy, a Mobile native, played in only four games for the Cardinals this season after suffering a broken collarbone during preseason camp. He caught only 15 passes for 179 yards and no touchdowns, but returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score in Louisville’s 52-45 loss to Miami last Saturday.

Lacy never redshirted in four years at South Alabama, so he could presumably play the 2025 season at Louisville or elsewhere as a sixth-year senior if he does not play again this season. According to a report by Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, Lacy and the Cardinals are “working on a deal” for him to return to the team next season.

Lacy was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference pick at South Alabama in 2023, when he set a program record with 91 receptions and finished among the national leaders with 1,316 receiving yards. In four seasons with the Jaguars, the Faith Academy graduate caught 207 passes for 2,517 yards and 13 touchdowns, and also returned a punt for a score.

Lacy left the South Alabama program at the end of the 2023 regular season, and at one point considered turning pro. However, he entered the NCAA transfer portal and signed with Louisville after reportedly receiving a six-figure NIL deal.
