Íñigo Errejón, co-founder of Podemos and deputy of Sumar, resigned this Thursday: he leaves his seat and abandons institutional politics, as he explained in a statement. The 40-year-old politician and political scientist from Madrid affirms that he needs to move away from the “demands” and “rhythms” of the political front line. “I have been working on a personal process and psychological support for some time, but the truth is that I need to take care of myself,” he points out. And he adds that politics “generates a toxic subjectivity that in the case of men, patriarchy multiplies, with co-workers, with organizational colleagues, with emotional relationships and even with oneself.”
Errejón faced the then general secretary of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, at the party’s second congress held in 2017 (Vistalegre II). Until then friends, Errejón lost that traumatic congress who split the organization in two and was relegated from the position of spokesperson that until then he held in the lower house. In 2019, a few months before the regional and municipal elections, he announced that he was leaving the party to found Más Madrid together with the then mayor of Madrid, Manuela Carmena. With his candidacy, he achieved a victory over Podemos, which was greatly reduced in the regional Assembly. After his brief stint in regional politics, he ran in the general elections with Más País and won three deputies (one of them from Compromís, with whom he allied himself in those elections). In July 2023 she was on the lists of the Sumar coalition in the general elections, once again sharing a ballot with Podemos, and in recent months her party has begun a process to dissolve within the vice president’s formation.
