Fallout fans had a lot to digest during Fallout Day 2024, but one particular announcement for Fallout 76 raised eyebrows. While the game has certainly improved over the years, the introduction of the new four-player co-op mode feels very similar to the Space Marine 2 and Helldivers 2 formula.
It’s clear that Helldivers 2 and Space Marine 2’s success this year has set a trend. And it looks like Bethesda is hopping on the bandwagon. But this raises the question, will the studio innovate with it, or is it just an attempt to be a part of the trend?
Fallout 76 Will Join The Co-op Hype Of Helldivers 2 and Space Marine 2
Bethesda introduced The Gleaming Depths dungeon for Fallout 76, designed for up to four players. The new raid will include MMO-style challenges and the biggest boss ever in the franchise.
Sound familiar? That’s because anyone following co-op games this year knows the thrill of the recent co-op games this year where players can seamlessly strategize and coordinate in real-time. The differences don’t hide the fact that this is Bethesda’s attempt to ride the co-op wave.

In fairness, Bethesda has been adding features to the game steadily, with 50 free updates and new content like CAMP pets and player titles. But the introduction of a four-player dungeon now seems opportunistic.
Other games this year have already capitalized on co-op modes with a focus on tightly-knit team dynamics and strategic combat.

This new mode might have its own flair, but it’s difficult to shake off the feeling that Bethesda is copying something that has already proven successful. The co-op trend is clearly gaining momentum, and this update is their attempt to catch up.
Bethesda Had More Than Just Co-op Dungeons To Announce During Fallout Day
While the co-op mode and dungeon grabbed the spotlight, Fallout Day delivered more than just dungeon news. Bethesda used the event to celebrate the success of Fallout 76, which recently reached 20 million players, a significant milestone.

The game is also free to play until October 29th, inviting new players to experience Appalachia. Plus, fans were treated to Twitch drops and exclusive in-game goodies like the Rusted Pumpkin Jack-o-Light Candles, available until November 20th. If you’ve been eyeing some extra Atoms or Fallout products, discounts across all Fallout titles are live until October 29th.
Bethesda even touched on some future plans with details about the upcoming Ghoulification update set for a 2025 release. Players will be able to transform into ghouls, gaining radiation immunity and unique powers. This feature will most likely give the game an even newer life than it already has.

And for the dedicated vault dwellers, there’s also a nod to classic Fallout content: Fallout Shelter is offering a free bundle featuring characters from the Fallout TV show. So, if you’re a fan of both the games and the TV series, then there are some extra goodies for you.
While some were disappointed with the lack of news on upcoming titles or remastered classics like New Vegas, the developers showed their commitment to expanding Fallout 76 as it reaches 20 million players.
