Multiple people who were in the home when the fire started were able to get out safely along with their two dogs, according to fire officials. Two cats that were in the home were killed, the fire department said.

Heavy smoke damage throughout the house left the residence uninhabitable, displacing a family of four, fire officials said.

Fire crews received mutual aid at the scene from the Middletown South District, Chester Hose Company, East Haddam, Haddam Neck, Killingworth, Deep River and the Durham Fire Departments. Crews were at the scene for about two hours.
