Battle of the Lakes: No. 6 Lake Travis hosts No. 12 Westlake in heavyweight slugfest

AUSTIN (KXAN) — It’s one of the marquee matchups in Texas high school football every season, and this year is no different. It’s the Battle of the Lakes.

No. 6 Lake Travis hosts No. 12 Westlake for the District 26-6A lead and the Cavaliers are hoping to do something they haven’t done against the Chaparrals since 2019 — win the game.

The Cavs are 0-4 against the Chaps since the 26-25 win five years ago, losing matchups last year in district play and the 6A-Division I regional final. Cavs head coach Hank Carter said earlier in the week that his team is always in a great position to win a big game with Chaston Ditta taking the snaps.

“I love the way he’s been playing this year,” Carter said. “He gives us a chance to score at a high level in every ballgame. Our offensive line has played better than we probably anticipated. We knew they’d be a good group once we got around to the playoffs, but we really our act together early because of the teams we played.”

Ditta has completed 58% of his passes for 1,472 yards with 15 touchdowns this season, but the most important and impressive stat is he hasn’t thrown an interception yet. The Cavs have three receivers with more than 20 receptions this season and running back Van Hopping averages 117.7 rushing yards per game with 18 touchdowns.

Lake Travis is undefeated while the Chaps dropped their first regular season home game since 2018 earlier this year against No. 4 Humble Atascocita.

Westlake head coach Tony Salazar said this week is always “a fun week.”

“It’s an opportunity for us to go against another quality program from just down the street,” Salazar said. “We get to play December football in October.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Cavalier Stadium. Those in the Austin area can watch the game for free in the video player above or on KXAN.com/Westlake. The broadcast for outside of the Austin area can be seen on the NFHS Network with the proper subscription.
