Man able to stop knife attack in CT by pulling out firearm

A man was reportedly able to fend off a knife-wielding suspect when he pulled out a firearm in a parking lot in North Haven on Thursday, leading to police arresting the man who allegedly instigated the attack.

Police responded to the area of 45 Quinnipiac Ave. at 11:35 a.m. on the report of a threat involving a knife and found a man who told officers he was not hurt, according to the North Haven Police Department.

The man told police that an individual allegedly with a knife charged at him in the parking lot, leading him to take out a firearm that was used to foil the alleged attack, police said. The firearm was legally possessed, police noted.

According to police, the suspect fled the area in his vehicle, which was later found unoccupied. The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Obadiah Claud of West Haven, was found in a nearby business and taken into custody, police said. He was charged with second-degree threatening, possession of a deadly weapon and second-degree breach of peace.

Claud was held on a $50,000 bond and was expected to face a judge on Friday.

Police said their investigation involved multiple interviews and suggested the alleged attack was not a random incident. Police also said they believe “there is no known threat to the public.”
