More record highs possible Friday in Alabama

Summer-like temperatures are expected again across Alabama today, and more records may need to be rewritten.

Several locations broke or tied their high temperature records on Thursday:

* Anniston: 84 degrees (tied record from 2010)

* Birmingham: 86 degrees (tied record from 1927)

* Mobile: 89 degrees (old record was 87 in 1941)

* Montgomery: 88 degrees (tied record from 2001)

* Tuscaloosa: 86 degrees (tied record from 2010)

More of the same will be possible today. The National Weather Service said temperatures across the state are expected to top out in the mid- to even upper 80s today, which could put some records in jeopardy (today’s forecast is at the top of this post).

More near-record highs will also be possible on Saturday, forecasters said. Here are the forecast highs for Saturday:

What’s more, on Saturday there is a very slight chance some spots in northern Alabama could see a drop of rain, or two.

A cold front is expected to work its way through the state starting on Saturday, and it is expected to not bring much if any rain but a shift to more seasonable temperatures — at least for the northern half of the state — starting on Sunday.

Some warmer temperatures may stick around for a while, however.

The six- to 10-day temperature outlook from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center shows a high probability that all of Alabama will have above-average temperatures through at least Nov. 3:
