Person on scooter dies following hit-and-run crash in CT

One person was killed when a scooter collided with a vehicle during a hit-and-run crash in West Haven on Thursday evening.

Emergency crews responded to the area of First and Mix Avenues just before 7:20 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls for what was initially reported as a crash involving a motorcycle, according to Sgt. Scott Allard of the West Haven Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found that the vehicle was a scooter and that firefighters were already performing life-saving measures on the operator, Allard said. He was taken to an area hospital for his injuries where he later died, according to Allard.

The victim has not been identified. Allard said police on Friday morning were still in the process of making next of kin notifications.

According to Allard, a witness said the other vehicle involved in the crash did not stop after the collision and instead got onto the highway and left the area. The vehicle could not immediately be located.

The West Haven Police Department Major Accident Squad responded to investigate the crash.

Allard said First Avenue from Richards Street to the Interstate 95 entrance ramp was closed while crews were at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
