Football roundup: Capistrano Valley, Beckman, La Habra, Portola and Saddleback get big wins in Week 9

Reily Walker caught a screen pass and broke three tackles on his way to a 60-yard touchdown that provided the winning points for Capistrano Valley in a 28-21 win over El Modena in a Delta League game Friday night.

Capistrano Valley is tied with Tustin for first place. Both are 4-0 in league. They play each other this coming week, the final week of the regular season, on Friday at Tustin High.

El Modena is in third place with a 2-2 league record. The Vanguards are 7-2 overall.

Capistrano Valley quarterback Tommy Acosta threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Talon Spencer had five receptions for 77 yards for the Cougars.

CIF Southern Section football playoff brackets will be released Nov. 3.

Also in the Delta League:

Trabuco Hills 42, Cypress 28: Tristan Zale had six touchdowns in Trabuco Hills’ first league win.

The junior quarterback threw for 356 yards and threw five touchdown passes. Alex Kiernan had 220 yards receiving with three touchdown receptions and had three interceptions on defense.

Landon Pompey ran for 101 yards and had a receiving touchdown for Trabuco Hills (5-4, 1-3). Joshua Fitch added a touchdown reception.

In the Epsilon League:

La Habra 27, Laguna Hills 7: Kevika Maritnez scored on a 60-yard touchdown run on the Highlanders’ first play and added another rushing touchdown.

La Habra clinched at least a share of the Epsilon League title. The Highlanders are 4-0 in league and 8-1 overall.

Laguna Hills is 3-6 overall, 0-4 in league.

Foothill 34, El Dorado 31: Nico Mancini’s interception in the end zone with seven seconds remaining sealed the win for the Knights that kept them in contention for a guaranteed playoff berth.

Mancini finished with eight receptions for 84 yards. Tight end Troy Naulty had four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.

With regular starter Gino Marchetti out because of injury, junior Jake Lind started at quarterback for the Knights. Lind threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

The Knights are 2-2 in the Epsilon league and tied for third place with Huntington Beach going into the final week of the regular season. The top three finishers in a six-team league like the Epsilon get guaranteed berths in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Foothill, 5-4 overall, plays at La Habra on Friday. El Dorado (3-6, 1-3) plays at Huntington Beach on Friday.

Crean Lutheran 38, Huntington Beach 14: Cornerback Patrick Hall lead a great defensive effort for the Saints.

Crean Lutheran improved to 7-2 overall and is 3-1 in league. Huntington Beach is 5-4 overall, 2-2 in league.

Ben Byszewski returned an interception for a touchdown to give the Saints a 17-7 lead. Anthony Jones and Tyler Parker had sacks for Crean Lutheran.

In the Iota League:

Sonora 71, Canyon 54: Anthony Abad rushed for 339 yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries for the Raiders (5-4 overall, 2-2 in league) at El Modena High.

Alexsay Nazaroff also had a big night carrying the football for Sonora. Nazaroff rushed for 226 yards and four touchdowns on only 7 carries. Sonora’s Olin Morales rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.

Canyon is 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the new league.

El Toro 49, Santa Ana 6: Jack McKelvy passed for four touchdowns and ran for another for the Chargers, who improved to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the Iota League. They are tied for second place with Irvine. Troy is in first place with a 4-0 league record.

El Toro plays at home against Troy on Friday.

In the Lamda League:

Beckman 48, Valencia 27: Noah Nam completed 9 of 10 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns for the Patriots, who earned a share of the league title.

Beckman is 9-0 overall and 4-0 in league.

The Patriots are among four undefeated teams in Orange County football. Brea Olinda, Mater Dei and Mission Viejo are the others.

The Patriots play Marina (8-1, 3-1) on Friday at Westminster High.

In the Bravo League:

Yorba Linda 42, Newport Harbor 17: Cole Nerio had three rushing touchdowns for Yorba Linda in a home win over Newport Harbor.

Holden Nagin threw touchdown passes to Santiago Salas and Tanner Eilers. Thomas Knutson had an interception for Yorba Linda (8-1, 3-1).

Jake Meer threw for 155 yards with a touchdown for Newport Harbor (3-6, 2-2). Sammy Stremick had a 38-yard touchdown reception.

Corona del Mar 44, Tesoro 14: Brady Annett had four touchdown passes for Corona del Mar in its first Bravo League win.

James Garrett had two touchdown receptions for Corona del Mar (4-5, 1-3). Sebastian Roydell and Dorsett Stecker caught touchdown passes and Wyatt Lucas had two touchdown runs. Breck Clemmer had an interception for the Sea Kings.

Vaughn Steinert had two touchdown passes for Tesoro (3-6, 0-4). Braiden Vaca had 133 yards receiving with a touchdown and Campbell Schamel had a touchdown catch.

In the Foxtrot League:

Aliso Niguel 30, Orange 14: Jarett Sabol had two touchdown runs for Aliso Niguel in its second straight win.

Tommy Smith had a touchdown run for Aliso Niguel (6-3, 2-2) and Carson Etnire had an interception return for a touchdown.

Star Thomas threw a touchdown pass to Gianni Porfilio for Orange (2-7, 1-3). Xavier Valentine added a touchdown run.

In the Kappa League:

St. Margaret’s 38, Garden Grove 8: St. Margaret’s snapped a four-game losing streak with a convincing win over Garden Grove.

Kai Letcher threw three touchdown passes for St. Margaret’s (3-6, 1-3) including a 70-yard pass to Dominic Dalfiume. Dalfiume added another touchdown catch and Maverick Young had a touchdown reception.

Luke Newman and Reece Ballard had touchdown runs for the Tartans and Allison Mason made a field goal.

Quentin Pacelli had a touchdown run for Garden Grove (2-7, 0-4).

In the Omicron League:

Portola 28, Buena Park 26: Portola kept its league championship hopes alive with a win over Buena Park.

Timothy Grettenberg ran for 77 yards with two touchdowns for Portola (4-5, 4-0). Nash Luper threw a touchdown pass to Malachi Moore.

Jamal Abdelkarim had an interception for the Bulldogs and Blaise Williams blocked a field goal.

Lynnden Hodge ran for 256 yards with four touchdowns for Buena Park (4-5, 2-2). Hodge scored a touchdown in the final minute for the Coyotes, but Portola stopped the potential game-tying, 2-point attempt.

Pacifica 42, Katella 0: Pacifica ran for four touchdowns in a dominant win over Katella.

Ma’Kai Brown, Miguel Campos, Noah Lewis and Aaron Mora had touchdown runs for Pacifica (4-5, 4-0). James Anema threw touchdown passes to Armando Torres and Ethan McLaughlin.

Pacifica and Portola are both undefeated in league play and will play for the league championship Thursday at Portola High.

Woodbridge 19, University 14: Caden Jones threw two touchdown passes for Woodbridge in a win over University.

Erik Vining and Aydrien Garnica had touchdown receptions for Woodbridge (3-6, 2-2). Jeremy Harris had over 100 yards rushing with a touchdown.

Diego Sosa had a touchdown run for University (3-6, 0-4)  and Justin Tribble threw a touchdown pass to Damari Carter.

In the Tango League: 

Costa Mesa 48, La Quinta 43: Gavin Garza ran for 227 yards with three touchdowns for Costa Mesa in a high-scoring win over La Quinta.

Andrew Waiss threw for 171 yards with two touchdown passes and ran for another. Caden Oliver had two touchdown receptions for Costa Mesa (6-3, 2-2) and Gabin Nguyen added one.

Santiago 29, Loara 24: Juan Valadez had 133 yards receiving with a touchdown for Santiago.

Chris Ramirez threw for 198 yards with a touchdown for Santiago (4-5, 2-2). Ozzy Granados, Larry Bravo and Mario Carbajal ran for touchdowns for the Cavaliers.

In the Zeta League: 

Saddleback 42, Century 21: Saddleback clinched the league championship with a win over Century.

The Roadrunners last won a league championship in 1986 when it won the Sea View League. Saddleback (5-4, 3-0) was 0-10 last season.

Andre Scott threw four touchdown passes for Saddleback and ran for a touchdown. Andrew Alvarez had over 140 yards receiving with two touchdowns. Andre Raiford and Christopher Romero had touchdown receptions.

Noe Najera had a touchdown run and reception for Century (5-4, 1-2). Daniel Joya threw a touchdown pass and had a touchdown run.
