How Paul Mescal Landed a Role in Gladiator 2 After a 30 Minute Zoom Call

It’s no secret that Ridley Scott has an eye for talent and a knack for trusting his gut, but even the most die-hard fans couldn’t have predicted the straightforward, almost casual way Paul Mescal scored a role in Gladiator 2, a follow-up to Scott’s 2000 Academy Award-winning film.

The Irish actor, known for his intense, deeply nuanced performances, didn’t have to endure a grueling series of auditions or screen tests. Instead, all it took was a quick 30-minute Zoom call that left the veteran director convinced he’d found his new lead. Here’s how Mescal went from a virtual chat to a starring role in one of the most anticipated sequels of recent years!

The 30-Minute Call That Changed Everything For Paul Mescal

When Paul Mescal joined a Zoom call with Gladiator 2 director Ridley Scott, he expected the usual casting procedures which include, screen tests, auditions, and maybe even a chemistry read. But Scott had something else in mind, and it was only a brief conversation, with no frills or formalities, about the part and even some lighthearted talk about Gaelic football. Mescal spoke about the same in an interview with the BBC’s Graham Norton (via BBC).

Ridley does not waste time. I thought there would be camera tests and auditions, but we Zoomed for half an hour, spoke for 10 minutes about the part, and then 20 minutes about Gaelic football, his dog, and his wife.

For Mescal, who had already established himself as a star with a dedicated following, the ease of the conversation with Scott felt surprising but refreshing. Gladiator 2 was a big leap for the actor, both in terms of genre and scale, but Scott seemed to know right away that he’d found his Lucius, the grandson of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

I thought there would be more, but he called a few weeks later to offer me the part. I think he just goes by instinct, on set and off, and I’m very glad that’s the way it went.

This level of trust from a filmmaker of Scott’s caliber speaks volumes about Mescal’s magnetic screen presence and his rising influence in the industry. After all, this wasn’t just any casting, Gladiator had grossed over $465 million worldwide and left an indelible mark on film history.

With a single 30-minute chat, Scott had already placed his faith in Mescal to carry on the legacy of a film that helped define a generation.

Paul Mescal may be gearing up to wield a sword in the Colosseum, but his journey to stardom began in a far more intimate setting. The actor first became a well-known name in the industry after his breakthrough role as Connell Waldron in Hulu’s Normal People, a series that captured the hearts of audiences around the world during the pandemic.

Based on Sally Rooney’s acclaimed novel, Normal People introduced viewers to Mescal’s emotional depth and ability to convey vulnerability with haunting authenticity. The show’s success turned him into an instant sensation, sparking a wave of online admiration (and a bit of a frenzy over his signature chain necklace) as he became an unexpected symbol of the modern romantic hero.

From there, Mescal’s career only escalated! The Irish actor took on challenging roles in films like Aftersun, where he played a deeply troubled father, a portrayal that earned him an Academy Award nomination and solidified his reputation as an actor capable of profound, layered performances. His work in Aftersun was particularly personal for Mescal, who has often shared that he seeks out scripts that push him emotionally and psychologically.

Since Normal People, the actor has continued to steer clear of typical Hollywood blockbusters, opting instead for projects that demand sincerity and depth. His recent roles in All of Us Strangers and Foe have demonstrated his commitment to complex, character-driven stories.

For someone who once joked that his life changed almost overnight due to Normal People, Mescal has shown a remarkable dedication to his craft and an ability to choose roles that speak to him. This dedication has made his casting in Gladiator 2 a fascinating turning point, and Mescal will soon face his largest audience yet, bringing a whole new level of intensity to the screen.

The Powerhouse Cast of Gladiator 2: Denzel Washington and Beyond

The excitement surrounding Gladiator 2 isn’t just about its storyline but the incredible lineup of talent set to bring it to life. Mescal isn’t the only powerhouse in the cast, we’ll also see Denzel Washington step into the role of Macrinus, a retired gladiator turned wealthy arms dealer, who harbors his own vision for Rome’s future. Washington’s magnetic presence and knack for complex characters add another layer of depth to the film, promising scenes that will resonate with the audience long after the credits roll.

Fans of Stranger Things will also see a familiar face, as Joseph Quinn joins the cast, likely bringing his intense, focused energy to this historical epic, adding intrigue to a film already heavy with anticipation. Returning cast members include Connie Nielsen as Lucilla and Derek Jacobi as Senator Gracchus, both reprising their roles and providing a thread of continuity that fans of the original will appreciate.

Nielsen’s portrayal of Lucilla, still a figure of intelligence and strength, brings a touch of nostalgia while grounding the film in the larger story of Gladiator. Jacobi’s return as Gracchus adds political gravitas, setting up a complex world where personal ambitions clash with empire-scale rivalries.

This lineup hints at a production that could capture both the visceral action and the philosophical questions that made the original Gladiator so captivating. Scott, who has directed some of the most iconic films of the past several decades, is sure to blend historical intrigue with complex characters, creating a world as rich in ethical conflict as it is in brutal combat.

Mescal’s rapid ascent from a Zoom call to one of Hollywood’s most iconic franchises is a testament to both his talent and Scott’s instincts. Fans of the first film and newcomers alike will soon witness whether this modern-day gladiator has what it takes to conquer the Colosseum.

Gladiator 2 will be in theatres from November 22, 2024.
