Wesley Snipes’ Blade 3 Did Not Even Need Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel’s Sidekicks in His Franchise to Begin With

Wesley Snipes’ return in Deadpool & Wolverine as Blade had some fans who are privy to the Hollywood drama quite shocked, given that they were aware of the kind of relationship Snipes allegedly had with Reynolds, which stemmed from the tumultuous production on Blade: Trinity.

While there was a lot that Snipes had to say about the production of Balde: Trinity, going so far as to sue the company for issues related to it, there is a case to be made that some of the friction on set could have been avoided if Blade remained the sole focus of the film.

Wesley Snipes believed that the third film in the franchise had little to do with his character, instead focusing on Balde’s sidekicks in hopes of getting some spin-offs off the ground. These sidekicks, played by Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds, seemed to have gotten more screentime than they merited, which cut into the story of Blade. A part of the suit that Snipes brought against the production alleged that the actor had the script, the director, and the sidekicks thrust upon him, with no room for his input, despite him being a producer on the project.

This was not helped by the fact that Ryan Reynolds had made it his personal mission to get the actor to crack, improving with Biel in an effort to make Wesley Snipes laugh. Given that the actor was already irritated at the level of humor that the script had, this was the reason the Snipes had a bone to pick with Reynolds when it came to working together.

The consensus around Blade: Trinity is that the film would have had a much better time had it focused solely on Blade and his adventures, rather than trying to show-horn actors and characters for the sake of building a franchise.

The third film would have merited a focus on Blade and the completion of his arc from the previous two films. However, the ‘juvenile humor’ in the script, coupled with the extra sidekicks might have taken the focus off of Blade. Not only did this drive Marvel’s first franchise into the ground, but it also made one of Marvel’s biggest hits no longer useable for the foreseeable future.

However, the Blade trilogy is owed a lot more than just the criticism of its final film, given that it essentially set the stage for the modern superhero landscape, allowing characters like Spider-Man, X-Men, and even the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Blade: Trinity is available for rent on Prime Video.
