AUSTIN (KXAN) — Día de los Muertos is just a few days away, and here’s is a list of celebrations occurring across Central Texas.
Día de los Muertos, or also known as Day of the Dead is a holiday among Hispanic cultures. From Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, families welcome their loved ones’ souls back to Earth. The day is celebrated with a reunion, food, drinks, music and the favorite items of lost loved ones.
Although this rich tradition originated in Latin America, it has gained popularity in certain areas of the US, including central Texas.
Georgetown
The City of Georgetown is celebrating Día de los Muertos on Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the South Main Arts District with a lunch event. The celebration will include music, live dance performances, sugar skull face paintings, paper flower crafting and more.
Expect to find traditional Latin American foods, drinks and sweets and a community ofrenda (altar). This event is sponsored by the Downtown Georgetown Association, the Central Texas Art Focus, GTX Connect, and Change Hope & Wellness.
The Bastrop Museum and Visitor Center
The Bastrop Museum, Visitor Center and County Historical Society is celebrating Día de los Muertos from Oct. 26 to Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the museums special exhibit room.
At the museum, there will be ofrendas created by local families including photos, food and memories of passed loved ones. There will also be a open community altar where visitors can leave their own photos or memories of passed loved ones.
This celebration is free and open to all ages. If planning to leave a photo or memory it is important to remember they will not be returned back.
Waterloo Park
Siete Family Foods is celebrating Día de los Muertos with the community at the Moody Amphitheatre Waterloo Park on Nov. 1 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. This celebration will include community altars, live art, Latinx art vendors, calavera face painting, and even an ‘albrije’ or lost pet altar.
La Peña Gallery
The La Peña Gallery Latino Arts Organization is hosting their “Celebrando la Vida” group art and altar exhibition. The exhibit will consist of art work dedicated to lost loved ones and art work from featured artists.
The gallery will be open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 3 p.m. on Saturdays. This exhibit will be showcased from Oct. 7 to Nov. 15 at the La Peña Gallery.
Republic Square Park
The Mexic-Arte Museum and Downtown Austin Alliance present the “Muertos Mercado” at Republic Square. This free family event will happen on Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This celebration will feature a partnership with the Sustainable Farmers Market and over 30 vendors, music, dancing, storytelling and much more.
Round Rock
The 11 annual ‘Día de los Muertos‘ Festival is happening at the Centennial Plaza in Downtown Round Rock. The event begins on Nov. 2 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Round Rock Ballet Folklórico program and will feature a full lineup of of performances, a parade and magic shows.
