$25 million donation to fund new substance abuse recovery center at Hoag

$25 million donation to fund new substance abuse recovery center at Hoag

The Hoag health care system announced a $25 million donation on Monday, Sept. 16, that will be used to support the establishment of CareMar Recovery Center, a comprehensive addiction treatment facility in Orange County.

The gift from the Martin and Pickup families of Newport Beach will bolster the development of the recovery center, and Hoag officials have committed to raising more money to advance the project, which will be a multi-level facility on the south campus of Hoag Hospital Newport Beach, facing the Pacific Coast Highway.

Carole Pickup, mother of Devon Martin and Todd Pickup, was the inspiration behind the contribution made by her philanthropic family, honoring her decades of advocacy for substance use recovery resources across Orange County, according to Hoag officials. Family members Carole Pickup, Devon Martin, Kevin Martin, Todd Pickup and Natalie Pickup made the donation.

“It’s been a longtime goal of our family to work with Hoag to create a facility that people know they can turn to with the resources to change their lives for the better,” Devon Martin, who also serves on the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, said in a statement. “We see this gift as a first step toward making that a reality for everyone, no matter where they are in their recovery journey.”

Main features of the center will include home-like residential quarters, private consultation rooms and indoor and outdoor communal spaces that promote wellness and collaboration, according to Hoag officials.

“We see a major need for it in Orange County, and our vision is a first-in-class facility that expands Hoag’s ability to deliver our vital services for addiction support and care,” Hoag President and CEO Robert Braithwaite said in a statement. “This gift will put our plans into action, and with addiction, moving fast is paramount to saving lives.”
