Squid Game Season 2 is going to pick up where the first season left off, which is intriguing given that Gi-hun has decided to rage against the game and the system that put it in place. However, since the special teaser hit the internet, it seems that Gi-hun will find himself in the games yet again, and no less helpless than he was the first time around, despite having prior knowledge of what’s to come.
The teaser has managed to reveal some interesting details that could potentially expand on what audiences already know about the challenges. There are at least five details that could add a new dimension to the story, building on what Season 1 had set up, while also thickening the intrigue that the story has to offer.
1. There must be a special suite for Seong Gi-hun
In the opening moments of the trailer, Seong Gi-hun seems to be in a room that could be an abandoned hotel. However, as he walks to the door, he is confronted by the Front Man when he opens it, who seems to be in a corridor that could be part of the complex where the challenges are held.
It is possible that the games could be different now, or Gi-hun could receive special treatment as the winner of the Squid Game, which comes in the form of accommodations. It is no doubt that the Game masters will know about his reservations against the game, and could come to give him an edge over other participants.
2. A Manager wearing a Black Uniform
The teaser managed to debut a new black uniform for a Manager, as opposed to the normal pink color that we see them wearing along with the other foot soldiers. It has been speculated that this could be because the character is coming in to announce a death, but it could also be the case that this is a completely new character after all.
There is also a possibility that this could be a change implemented to deter outside agents from sneaking in with uniforms, given that there will be someone who is familiar with the games participating, who could be acting with people outside the game to dismantle or rig it.
3. What is Club HDH?
Club HDH is one of the more interesting easter eggs from the teaser. We see a Manager coming out of a room marked with the initial. It is interesting to note that the markings are in English and not Korean, possibly hinting at the fact that this could be some room for the foreign actors who come to enjoy these games.
This could be a new room altogether, given that there probably will be a new host. Perhaps this club could be a place to entertain them, given that the creator and host of the games passed away, and the Game is currently looking for an heir.
4. The limousine for Seong Gi-hun
The Manager seems to be standing ready with a limousine for someone, most likely Seong Gi-hun. This could be ferrying the latter to the challenges, or even from it after he wins a second time. The Limo could also be there to take him to the holding cell/hotel that audiences saw earlier in the trailer. Either way, it points to the fact that Gi-hun has been tracked down by the organizers of the game, and it is not known why.
5. Why is there a focus on the Workers?
The teaser also focused a lot on the workers, those with a triangle shape on their masks. Coming out of their cells and how they prepare for the challenges was a major part of the early moments of the trailer.
The second season of the show could delve deeper into the mythology of these works, and why they have such strict rules of anonymity and conduct, going so far as to not even leave their rooms until they are called upon for service.
There has been a lot of speculations around these works, that they could be those who prefer a steady small pay-check over gambling with their lives, which would fit in with why the Squid Game was made the way it was.
Squid Game Season 2 will begin streaming on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
