The rise of demand for racing films has grown significantly higher over the past few years and Tom Cruise is reportedly contemplating making a sequel to 1990’s Days of Thunder. It’s a good idea, though, because he was able to bring back the nostalgia of the Top Gun franchise into the fold again.
One interesting angle fans can look into this prospect is that he and his ex-wife Nicole Kidman could make history by costarring again in the potential sequel. They notably met and fell in love on the set of Days of Thunder, so seeing them work together again on the big screen would certainly interest the viewers.
Potential Days of Thunder Sequel May Reunite Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
An insider revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Tom Cruise is reportedly planning to pick up Days of Thunder again, along with many other projects he’s currently dealing with.
He’s talking [to Paramount] about Top Gun and Days of Thunder. It’s going to be what comes together first in terms of a script. It depends on the idea and, ultimately, the script.
Cruise presently juggles work on Mission: Impossible 8 and the much-anticipated follow-up to Top Gun: Maverick. The source did not reveal the actor’s motivation for revisiting an old classic film, but the hype around car racing movies has been becoming fashionable lately. Take, for example, James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari and Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming F1 starring Brad Pitt.
The scooper believed making a sequel to Days of Thunder isn’t entirely a bad idea, but one thing that would certainly pique the audience’s interest is how Cruise would deal with the possible return of Nicole Kidman in the project.
There is no confirmation if the actress will play Dr. Claire Lewicki again as the script is yet to be written and produced, but wouldn’t it be a good idea to see the ex-couple collaborate once more?
Not many former couples would dare to work side by side with their previous partners, so Cruise and Kidman would become the first A-list Hollywood stars to reunite in a film if Days of Thunder 2 happens.
Fans would recall Courteney Cox and David Arquette starring in 2022’s Scream, but unfortunately, they aren’t on the same level of fame as Cruise and Kidman. The legendary Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were both big stars, but they reunited in a Broadway show and not in a movie.
Nicole Kidman on Meeting Tom Cruise for the First Time
Nicole Kidman recalled her first encounter with Cruise on the set of Days of Thunder, and truth be told, she was smitten right away. In her interview with Vanity Fair, she shared, “He got out of the car and walked through the door, and I was like, ‘Ah.’ My jaw dropped.”
Both were so in love with each other that they tied the knot the same year as the film’s release. Sadly, Cruise filed for divorce in 2001 due to irreconcilable differences.
