Edgerunners; Darling in the Franxx Season 2 was Never Out of the Question

Darling in the Franxx may be one of the most controversial stories in anime history, but it remains popular largely because of Zero Two. In fact, her popularity exceeds that of the anime at times. While the anime has its share of controversies, there’s no denying that it is hailed as one of the greatest mecha series ever.

Given the anime’s immense popularity, it’s understandable that many fans felt disappointed with the epilogue, as neither Hiro nor Zero Two received the satisfying closure they deserved. Even after years of conclusion, many fans still wonder: Is it possible to have Darling In The Franxx season 2? While Studio Trigger has ruled out any plans for its popular title Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, that shouldn’t imply the same fate for Darling in the Franxx.

With Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Ruled Out, Studio Trigger May Prioritize Darling in the Franxx for Season 2

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners premiered in September 2022 to high praise from fans and critics, even sparking a resurgence in Cyberpunk 2077 that saw upwards of one million players jumping in each day. Created in collaboration between CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follows young mercenary David Martinez.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners serves as a prequel to Mike Pondsmith’s similarly named tabletop role-playing game and takes place about a year before the events of Cyberpunk 2077.

Despite the show’s immense success, CD Projekt’s Japanese community manager Satoru Honma has numerous times confirmed that there are no plans to continue the show, saying Edgerunners was intended to be a standalone work.

In the wake of the disappointing news about no prequel for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, many fans have begun to blame Studio Trigger for seemingly abandoning their successful titles, starting with Darling in the Franxx.

Surprisingly, in an engaging interview, Atsushi Nishigori, the director of Darling in the Franxx, discussed the potential for a sequel and the return of Hiro and Zero Two. He revealed:

My mind is completely emptied out. Over time, if my passion wells up and there’s qualified talent that wants to come a long, then maybe.

Darling in the Franxx is among the popular and celebrated mecha anime. Written by Code 000, the series is set in a post-apocalyptic and dystopian world. The series, however, is unlike any other mecha anime due to its take on relationships.

The mecha anime series takes place in a post-apocalyptic future, where adults and children are separated from one another. Despite the series’ popularity, its very name is still a mystery to many. As interesting as it sounds, the main plot quickly becomes irrelevant, only to be replaced by fan service and bad politics. Darling in the Franxx has central themes that have nothing to do with giant robots.

Code 000 Embarks on a Treacherous Journey Through Their Series

Code 000’s Darling in the Franxx has received mixed responses from the community. Despite its popularity, it had several pitfalls. Not to mention, the anime has also been criticized for its subpar animation by several fans and the distasteful representation of female characters has been met with backlash.

Apart from being a mecha anime, its storytelling fell flat due to the excessive fanservice. Despite its potential, the series faced extensive flak for its pacing and plot development. Amidst the criticism and backlash, Code 000 carved its space in the mecha genre.

The series ranks among the top 10 mecha anime. Despite a modest score, it remains iconic, with CloverWorks, TRIGGER, and A-1 Pictures forming a successful collaboration.

Darling in the Franxx is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
