Real Reason Why Mads Mikkelsen Refused to Join Leonardo DiCaprio’s Dream Project: ‘It can never happen’

Fans of the entertainment industry have been crushing on Mads Mikkelsen for a while now and recently, his admirers have only grown in number. The man may be inching towards sixty but he sure is aging like fine wine and we really, really, can’t peel our eyes away from his charm. Honestly, villains have never looked better.

Back in 2020, Mads Mikkelsen starred in the Danish film, Another Round, where he played the role of Martin, a high school teacher who along with his peers decided to test out an interesting theory in school. Now, it was recently revealed that an English-language remake of the film is all set to be made with Leonardo DiCaprio starring in it. Despite the original film being heavily awarded, Mads Mikkelsen has made it clear that he has no intention of being a part of the remake.

Back in 2021, Another Round received the Best International Feature Film award at the Oscars, proving just how brilliant the movie was. This was just one of the many accolades received by Thomas Vinterberg’s art piece and it’s no wonder that Hollywood would want to get its hands on a story so impeccable.

It was soon announced that Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way would be producing the remake and that Chris Rock would be taking the role of the director instead of Vinterberg (via Deadline). As per The Guardian, The Wolf of Wall Street actor will be taking over Mikkelsen’s character.

As for whether Mads Mikkelsen will be returning to play Martin or not, well the answer has been given by the actor himself. In a 2021 interview with Indie Wire, the Fantastic Beasts actor stated that he was actually pretty “glad” to not be a part of the remake.

He believes that it is tricky to bring the same character to life again and that Martin would be better off under someone else’s hold. In his own words:

I’m glad not to be a part of it. This is what we did. Unlike theater, where you can do it one year and do it again a couple years later, the little moments we do in films are happening right here and now — something interesting your fellow actor brings on set that day. I would probably want to change these scenes again. It can never happen. It’s a tricky thing to replay the same character. It’s better off in someone else’s hands.

Mikkelsen couldn’t have said it better. Now all we need to do is wait to find out just how perfect DiCaprio would be at filling his shoes – it certainly isn’t going to be an easy feat to accomplish.

Thomas Vinterberg Takes a Hilarious Dig at Chris Rock

Remember how the world stood still when Chris Rock presented at the 2022 Oscars and ended up getting smacked across the face by Will Smith? For a moment we thought that it was all part of the gig but reality soon hit when Smith shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth!” The controversy has been termed “Slapgate” and even 2 years later we still can’t believe that actually happened on such an important stage.

Anyway, let’s come back to Vinterberg and Another Round’s remake. When Rock’s name became linked to the film, Vinterberg took a dig at the comedian stating that if the remake ended up being “sh*t, he’ll get slapped again.”

However, he later took his words back stating, “I’m afraid I said that. But I sent him an apology as he might not have found it funny.” (Via Variety). Too soon?

The remake will be produced by DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson (Appian Way), and Brad Weston and Collin Creighton (Makeready). Only time will tell if the film will live up to the original or not.

Another Round is available to watch on Prime Video.
