CT man suspected in gang-related shootout faces federal prison on gun charge

A Connecticut man has pleaded guilty to a federal firearm charge stemming from a gang-related shootout, according to federal authorities.

Chevon Grant, 27, of Hartford, is scheduled to be sentenced on January 9, and faces up to 10 years in prison, according to federal authorities.

Authorities, citing court documents and statements made in court, said an “unidentified shooter, who is suspected of being a member of a rival gang, opened fire at individuals who were standing in a parking lot outside of a memorial gathering at a party venue on Main Street in Hartford” in 2022.

Authorities said that “surveillance cameras at the location recorded at least nine individuals drawing firearms, some of whom returned fire.”

Further, Shot Spotter technology “recorded approximately 50 shots fired within approximately 90 seconds in and around the location, and law enforcement recovered at least 31 shell casings from the scene,” authorities said. “Grant was present at the memorial gathering and was recorded on surveillance videos brandishing a handgun.”

Police said at the time that they observed a large crowd of both adults and children running from the area.

Hartford police later obtained a warrant for Grant’s arrest in relation to the shootout and he was also subject to two additional state arrest warrants for other alleged offenses at that time, authorities said. Then, in May 2022, officers found Grant in a parked vehicle, “retrieved a loaded Ruger P90 .45 firearm from beneath the driver’s seat, and took Grant into custody.”

Authorities said Grant’s criminal history includes state felony convictions for robbery and larceny offenses and he therefore is prohibited from possessing a gun.

Grant is in state custody, as state charges against him are pending.

The investigation was done by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Northern Connecticut Gang Task Force; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the Hartford Police Department.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a “program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce gun violence and other violent crime, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.”
