Johnny Depp has always been in the limelight for his complex relationships. While his recent legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard became a massive pop culture event in 2022, the 61-year-old actor also generated multiple headlines in the 90s during his relationship with Kate Moss.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star shared a whirlwind relationship with the British supermodel after meeting her in 1994. Despite being madly in love with each other, the couple was also notorious for their frequent public arguments. However, one such argument went out of hand, leading Johnny Depp to be arrested at The Mark Hotel.
Johnny Depp’s relationship with Kate Moss even got him arrested
Besides his outstanding filmography, Johnny Depp is also known for his long list of lovers. Depp met Kate Moss at Café Tabac in February 1994. Reportedly, a former writer at Vanity Fair, George Wayne, acted as their matchmaker (via The Face).
While the bond was highly publicized for the couple’s rampant PDAs, it was also marred with controversial fights. One such fight even led Johnny Depp to get arrested in September 1994 for criminal mischief. The Ed Wood actor allegedly trashed his hotel room. PEOPLE reports that the police found him “in a state of possible intoxication” but Moss was unharmed.
Unlike his legal trouble against Amber Heard, this case took little time. A criminal court judge dropped the charge against Depp on the condition that he must stay out of any kind of trouble for 6 months. Johnny Depp‘s close friend and director John Waters even described the incident as a “minor incident” in a chat with PEOPLE.
I think Johnny obviously has a temper. But this is a very minor incident. The room service must have been bad.
Additionally, Johnny Depp had to pay a large sum of $9,767.12, including more than $2,000 for damages to The Mark Hotel. The Edward Scissorhands actor also had to clear the remainder of his reservation fees.
Strangely, Kate Moss also created drama at another elite hotel when she appeared at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1998. Besides allegedly getting reprimanded for wearing a bikini in the hallways of Hotel du Cap, she was reportedly banned for life at the hotel for trashing her room.
Kate Moss was intensely hurt after split with Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp and Kate Moss often appeared head over heels for each other and their love only appeared to be growing more until they called it quits in 1997. Nobody could guess a concrete reason behind their split, but during a chat with Hello! Magazine, Depp took full responsibility for it and suggested that his busy work schedule might be the reason.
The Jack Sparrow fame admitted that he “was difficult to get on with” and did not prioritize her over his busy schedule. In 1998, when the duo graced the Cannes Film Festival, the media widely speculated a possible patch-up, but sadly, that never took place.
Later in a 2012 interview with Vanity Fair, Kate Moss spoke highly about Depp and claimed that nobody could ever love her like the The Tourist actor. She added that it was intensely difficult for her to tackle the breakup.
