CT man charged in crash that killed a father of four

Police have charged the driver of a pickup truck involved in a crash that killed a motorcyclist in Connecticut last month.

Juan Ochoa-Macias, 31, of Norwalk was arrested Tuesday on charges of misconduct with a motor vehicle and failure to yield while turning left, according to Sgt. Ryan Evarts of the Norwalk Police Department.

Evarts said Ochoa-Macias was driving a pickup truck on Sept. 14 when he turned left from Winfield Street onto Pequot Drive and, as he did, struck a motorcyclist that was headed west on Winfield Street. According to Evarts, the motorcycle was being driven by Dwight Clifford St. John, 59, of Norwalk “at a reasonable speed.”

St. John was taken in an ambulance to Norwalk Hospital where he died the next day, according to Evarts.

Officers with the Norwalk Police Accident Reconstruction team investigated the crash and obtained a warrant charging Ochoa-Macias. He posted $50,000 bond following his arrest and is scheduled to face a judge on Oct. 29.

According to an obituary, St. John grew up in the East Norwalk section of town and had four children.

“Above all else, Dwight loved his family, and he showed it every day by calling all of his children multiple times a day,” the obituary states. “They were his absolute pride and joy, his legacy, and his solace. He was the greatest father, uncle, and loving friend. He made his home a home to all, demonstrated by a literal open-door policy which was the truest testament to how caring and welcoming he was to all.”

According to the obituary, St. John was also an avid volunteer at Grace Farms and was a regular attendee of men’s bible study.

“Everyone who knew Dwight appreciated him for his humor, sarcastic way and his thoughtfulness,” the obituary states.

“His jovial and amicable language drew many to him, toughening on the exterior but a big lovable bear on the inside. Dwight grew up on the water and loved being on a boat or swimming in the sound. He was a skilled boat captain who could manage any sea and he loved taking boat trips with his children along the East Coast shores.”
