One Direction member Liam Payne has passed away at the age of 31. The singer rose to fame when he performed along with other members of the boy band: Harry Styles, Zayn, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. They first performed on the show The X Factor and were later signed on to judge Simon Cowell’s record label.

Payne’s most recognizable feature have been his tattoos. The singer’s arms are filled with art, which he has since mentioned holds special meanings. Payne also mentioned that it was almost an addiction, as after the first tattoo he received on his ankles, he kept looking at his body and imagined how to fill up the space.

While the singer seemed to have meaning to many of his tattoos, one in particular stood out because it was an impulse buy. In an interview with GQ, the What Makes You Beautiful singer revealed that he had gone out shopping and had ended up at the tattoo parlor a bit drunk and asked the artist to draw a chevron on his forearm. He said,

Then I literally woke up the next morning in a little bit of a haze, not really remembering what was going on. But I knew my arm was really hurting, and I was like, ‘Aw, no’. And then I was like, having flashbacks of what happened the night before, and I looked down at my arm and I was like, ‘Oh my God’. And this was the only tattoo I ever googled, like, ‘How do you remove tattoos?’

The singer also mentioned that he had come to like the tattoos and saw them as stories to be told. He also mentioned that the chevron ended up being the logo of his clothing line with Hugo Boss.

As a member of the boy band One Direction, Liam Payne experienced fame and popularity like no other. The six-member group was deemed to be as popular as The Beatles at their peak due to the craze surrounding them. They were the most successful artists to come out of The X Factor (via Huffington Post).

Hence, it was only natural for an artist as young as Liam Payne to contemplate the fame that came to him. It affected him so much that in the interview with GQ, he spoke about his first tattoo, which was reportedly inked on his ankle. He said,

It’s like on my leg here, there’s like a little cross on my ankle. And a cross on the other ankle. Screw your legs to your feet, so it keeps you grounded, or whatever. It was something stupid. But we got these things. It was like, I thought I’d start at the ankle.

Payne reportedly also got another tattoo that said ‘Everything I wanted but nothing I’ll ever need,’ which he said was inked when he was enjoying his level of success, fame, and stardom but realized that it was not what he wanted.
