Silent Hill 2 Remake: How to Beat Mary

The last boss of the Silent Hill 2 Remake is an emotional culmination of the horrors James Sunderland has experienced throughout his time in the town of Silent Hill.

It represents a confrontation with the unvoiced, tumultuous feelings he holds toward his deceased wife, Mary, and an attempt to resolve the guilt that has plagued him since her death and manifested as the terrifying creatures he encounters throughout the game.

Mary, or rather, an emotionally charged manifestation of Mary, is the final obstacle between the player and the end of the game. Konami made sure she’s no pushover, but our guide will prepare you with everything you need to know regarding how to kill Mary.

How to Prepare to Fight Mary?

Silent Hill 2 Remake: How to Beat Mary
Regardless of the difficulty you’re on, Mary is not an easy fight.

Mary can be found at the end of the stairwell at Lakeview Hotel, on the roof of the building. All you need to do to get to her is to proceed through the game as you would, solving the various mandatory puzzles along the way.

When James meets Mary in the final area of Lakeview Hotel, they’ll have a short conversation. At this point, the game has decided which of the several endings you’ll get.

Depending on what you’re locked into, Mary and James will have a different reaction to what’s going on before she inevitably transforms into her boss form and attacks you.

Since there are limited supplies in Silent Hill 2 Remake, the most you can do to ensure you have what it takes to beat this boss is the right weapon and plenty of ammo for it.

You can obtain more ammo by exploring the town and trying to complete every single puzzle you come across, as the optional ones will be hiding resources. Make sure you have plenty of Syringes and Health Drinks as well.

Best Weapon

  • The Rifle is undoubtedly the best weapon in the game with its damage potential.
  • The Shotgun is good for pulling off close-range attacks.
  • If you’re on NG+, the Chainsaw is a great melee weapon.

Once you have your loadout prepared, get ready to take on Mary in the final boss encounter.

There’s no time to be terrified at her grotesque look as you have a ton of attacks to look out for.

The Silent Hill 2 Mary boss fight is split into three phases. After the final phase, you will have to take a certain action to officially ‘end’ the fight and see which ending you got. We have guides on obtaining the different endings if you’re looking for a specific one.

Mary: First Phase

During her first phase, she’ll be floating above the ground and teleport around the room while sending her moths to attack you occasionally.

You can attack these moths with your Pipe, and then use the Rifle to shoot at her when you get a chance. When she disappears, follow the swarm of moths to see where she’ll reappear.

Sometimes, she’ll use one of the steel bars of the cage-like structure to attack you, which you can dodge to the side to avoid.

Mary: Second Phase

A cutscene will play before she enters her second phase. She’ll break the floor, taking herself and James down through it.

The Shotgun is a better choice for this phase since Mary will appear close to you throughout the fight.

This area is barely lit, so you’ll have to use your flashlight to find her. She’ll appear from different holes in the ceiling, and you just need to shoot her when you see her.

The best strategy for this phase is to stay around the same corner and shoot her when she appears.

Mary: Third Phase

You’ll enter the third phase after a cutscene plays and Mary breaks the walls of the building, allowing for some light to pour through. She can’t fly anymore; instead, she’ll be crawling around the floor in her steel cage like a spider.

In this phase, she’s incredibly aggressive and pretty fast. You can either keep your distance from her or circle her while attacking.

Be careful of her swipe attacks as they have an incredibly long range. Occasionally, she’ll turn into a swarm of moths and teleport to another part of the arena, so keep an eye out for that.

Tip

Her aggression in this phase makes it difficult to heal, so avoid taking hits as much as you can.

One of her new moves is the ability to shriek, which will stun James. You can’t dodge out of this, and there’s a chance she’ll hit you while you’re stunned.

When you’ve done enough damage, a cutscene will play showing her cage breaking down. To end the fight, you must approach her and take the final shot.

Congratulations! With that, you’ve completed your run of the Silent Hill 2 Remake. Let us know which ending you got in the comments below!
