Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos and Mater Dei in Division 1 for girls volleyball playoffs. – Orange County Register

Three Orange County teams are among the eight teams selected for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 girls volleyball playoffs.

Mater Dei is seeded No. 2, Huntington Beach is No. 3 and Los Alamitos is No. 7 in Division 1.

The other five Division 1 teams are Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth, Temecula Valley, Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach, Marymount of Los Angeles and Redondo Union of Redondo Beach.

The eight teams are divided into two pools. All three O.C. teams are in Pool B. Among the first-round games in Pool B on Wednesday is Los Alamitos at Mater Dei.

Mater Dei won the Division 1 championship last season. The Monarchs defeated Mira Costa in the Division 1 final.

CIF-SS girls volleyball has 10 playoff divisions. Teams were placed into playoff divisions via the Massey Ratings System.

All division finals will be played Nov. 9. The Division 1 final, and perhaps others, will be played at Cerritos College. Other finals will be played at the gyms of the final-rounds’ home teams.

Rosary is the only Orange County team that is seeded No. 1 in a division. Rosary, which won the Pacific Coast League championship in its first year in the league, is top-seeded in Division 3.

JSerra and Santa Margarita qualified for the Division 2 playoffs as at-large teams. They finished in a three-way tie with Orange Lutheran for second-place in the four-team Trinity League. Orange Lutheran via tiebreakers is the Trinity League’s No. 2 team, and thus received guaranteed entry into the playoffs and, like JSerra and Santa Margarita, is in Division 2.

JSerra won the Division 2 championship last season by beating Orange Lutheran in the division final.

First-round matches are Wednesday in Divisions 1-3. First-round matches are Thursday in Divisions 4-10.

Among Wednesday’s first-round matchups is Sunny Hills at Aliso Niguel in Division 2. Sunny Hills won the Crestview League championship. Aliso Niguel tied with Trabuco Hills for second place, behind San Juan Hills, in the South Coast League.

In a Division 3 first-round match Canyon is at Dana Hills. Canyon finished third in the Crestview League. Dana Hills qualified as an at-large team and is seeded No. 2 in the division because of how the Massey Ratings System was applied to placing teams into divisions.
