Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs became an NFL record-holder on Sept. 29. On Sunday, the former Alabama ball-carrier lost his record – by scoring a touchdown.
Jacobs caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love on a second-and-goal snap against the Houston Texans as the Packers took a 21-19 lead with 7:25 remaining in the third quarter at Lambeau Field.
The reception was the 212th of Jacobs’ NFL career and the first that ended in the end zone.
In a 31-29 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 29, Jacobs had surpassed Gerald Riggs as the NFL player with the most career receptions without a touchdown. On Sunday, Jacobs gave that record back to Riggs.
Riggs played in the NFL from 1982 through 1991 and was a three-time Pro Bowl running back for the Atlanta Falcons. He totaled 8,188 yards and 69 touchdowns on 1,989 carries, including a league-leading 397 rushing attempts in 1985, when he piled up 1,719 yards on the ground.
Riggs’ 201 career receptions resulted in 1,516 yards, but none went for touchdowns.
Until Sunday, Jacobs and Riggs were the only players in NFL history who had caught at least 147 passes without any of them crossing the goal line.
Jacobs scored on his fourth reception on Sunday, then took a Lambeau Leap to celebrate with fans in the stands.
