Throughout his life and career, he was subjected to excessive media attention, looked down upon by certain factions of people for the way he led his life, and criticized for his choices. Many of these sentiments can also be felt in his interviews, and one of the many interviews he has given recently resurfaced, showing the hard life MJ had to lead despite money and fame.

One would think that Michael Jackson, who pretty much had everything that one could dream of, would have led a good life. With several million bucks to his name, a successful music career, and the love of innumerable fans, who can not live happily in this scenario?

Yet, while MJ had this and more, he wasn’t entirely a happy person given the things he was subjected to. From being criticized over his dressing sense to how he lived, and most particularly his appearance, there were more than a dozen things that Jackson had to bear.

This can be perfectly captured in one particular interview of his, which recently resurfaced on Instagram.

It’s not nice. I’m not a wacko… There’s no mysterious behavior. Maybe I like to live that way, maybe I like to dress that way… I have a heart and I have feelings, I feel that when you do that to me.

Remarked Jackson when the interviewer, Barbara Walters proceeded to ask him about his ‘mysterious lifestyle being a way to garner attention’ and him being nicknamed ‘wacko’. While this interview is only a glimpse of what the king of pop had to go through, recently, media personality Candice Owens made a video detailing the harsh life Michael Jackson was subjected to.

Michael Jackson’s legacy is not only full of his grand feats in the music and entertainment landscape but also contains innumerable conspiracy theories and allegations that make him seem not as nice of a person. Media personality Candice Owens has spoken about Michael Jackson several times and even made a video explaining the king of pop’s alleged connection recently.

However, in August, Owens made another video detailing the disturbing and turbulent life he led and the many horrendous experiences he was forced to go through. In the video, she also apologized to Jackson for believing conspiracy theories about him.

I was young, but I was disappointed in myself for having believed everything about someone who, you have no idea what this man meant, especially to black Americans... What happened to Michael Jackson could never happen today. The media ran things… They completely controlled our minds. I, too, was warped to believe that Michael Jackson was a pedophile.

She also spoke on the significance of Micahel Jackson as a pop culture icon, his life story, and how the media portrayed him. While it is kind of shocking to see how her perspective changed in a couple of months, at the same time, it highlights the importance of empathy and the need to look beyond the surface when evaluating someone as grand as Michael Jackson and his life and legacy.
