Who Is Cooke Maroney? Jeniffer Lawrence’s Millionaire Husband Who Made a Fortune as an Art Gallerist

Back in 2018, Jennifer Lawrence made headlines for hanging out with a mysterious man, who later turned out to be Cooke Maroney, after netizens dug into him, following their obsession with the couple. But Maroney later turned out to be one of the rare Hollywood partners, who aren’t involved in the film business—rather, made a fortune by being a New York City-based art gallerist.

So how did art gallerist Cooke Maroney meet Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence? Moreover, how did someone from outside the industry sweep Lawrence off her feet and convince her to get married and have a happy family? Let’s learn more about Maroney and how the couple hit things off.

Who is Cooke Maroney?

Considering how low-key Jennifer Lawrence keeps her life, it might go unnoticed that the Oscar-winning star is now married with a child. And unlike her previous boyfriends, her husband isn’t from the entertainment industry. So, who exactly is Cooke Maroney

Well, according to Cosmopolitan, Cooke Maroney was born to James Maroney and Suki Fredericks, who own the Oliver Hill Farm in Leicester, Vermont (the 775 acres of land that currently operates as a bed and breakfast). According to Medium, Maroney’s parents started the farm up north in the 1990s, after they wanted to pursue a quieter, rural life away from the hustle of the city.

However, after Maroney grew up, he returned to the Big Apple as a teenager, where he studied art history at New York University (via People). Thereafter, he spent the majority of his career following in the footsteps of his father, who was previously an art dealer and the head of American paintings at Christie’s auction house.

Cooke Maroney’s Work Profile and Major Milestones

With a passion for art, following the completion of his NYU art history degree, Cooke Maroney built a successful career in the competitive art scene. He gained experience at the Gagosian Gallery, which exhibits famous contemporary art internationally, including in Rome, London, and Hong Kong.

According to The Cut, the 40-year-old has also worked with high-profile collectors, and painters like Carroll Dunham and even Björk’s ex-boyfriend, sculptor Matthew Barney. Meanwhile, with a keen eye for talent, Maroney has made a name for himself as the director of a prominent New York art gallery.

As of 2022, Maroney works as the Director-At-Large of Gladstone Gallery, in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, set in the Edward Durell Stone House. It’s a collection of galleries that house pieces from artists like Richard Prince, Anish Kapoor, Matthew Barney, and Lena Dunham’s father Carroll Dunham.

Further, according to Scottmax, Maroney is said to have built quite a fortune from his work with arts. Although in 2018, his net worth was estimated to be $15M, as of recent reports, the art director is said to stand at a staggering $25M net worth.

How Did Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney Meet?

So, after such iconic achievements in the field of art (and his dislike for social media), how did the sophisticated art gallerist cross paths with the down-to-earth Oscar winner? Well, Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney’s tale of romance began in the spring of 2018, after they were introduced by a mutual friend, Laura Simpson.

Although Lawrence wasn’t at a place to get married or commit to a relationship, she instantly connected with Maroney and immediately knew she wanted to spend forever with him. Explaining her feelings on the Naked with Catt Sadler podcast, the actress revealed how Maroney doesn’t treat her like a celebrity.

I definitely wasn’t at a place where I was like, ‘I’m ready to get married’. I just met Cooke and I wanted to marry him. We wanted to marry each other, we wanted to commit fully. He’s my best friend, so I want to legally bind him to me forever.

And fortunately, the paperwork exists for such a thing. It’s the greatest. You find your favorite person on the planet and you’re like, ‘You can’t leave!’ So I wanted to take that offer.

Therefore, dating someone who wasn’t in the spotlight proved to be a breath of fresh air for Lawrence. So much so that she wanted to have a more normal dating experience, and she even dropped her security details while out with Maroney. Despite initial nervousness, the actress mentioned that things eventually turned out fine.

Soon, within less than a year of dating, in February 2019, Jennifer Lawrence was spotted wearing a massive diamond ring. Shortly after, sources confirmed to People that Cooke Maroney had officially popped the question to the actress. A few months later, the couple hosted an engagement party at the River Café in Brooklyn.

Lawrence told ET in June 2019:

He’s just the best person I’ve ever met in my whole life. It was a very, very easy decision.

On an episode of Chicken Shop Date, Lawrence noted,

I didn’t say what I wanted to. I imagined it a million times, and then I ended up just going, ‘What? What? What?’ And then going, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you’.

Eventually, in October 2019, Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney tied the knot in front of 150 of their closest friends and family members at the luxurious Belcourt of Newport mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. With the guest list featuring stars like Adele, Amy Schumer, Kris Jenner, Emma Stone and Ashley Olsen, Lawrence reportedly walked down the aisle in a Dior gown.

Soon after her marriage, Lawrence returned to the spotlight and sat for an interview with Vanity Fair. Discussing her married life in detail, the actress mentioned how she loves the normal and down-to-earth aspects of her life with Maroney.

I really enjoy going to the grocery store with him. I don’t know why but it fills me with a lot of joy. I think maybe because it’s almost a metaphor for marriage. ‘Okay, we’ve got this list. These are the things we need. Let’s work together and get this done.’

And I always get one of the cooking magazines, like 15 Minute Healthy Meals, and he always gives me a look like, ‘You’re not going to use that. When are you going to make that?’ And I say, ‘Yes, I am. Tuesday!’ And he’s always right, and I never do.

Thereafter, as the couple got married and started thinking of building a family together, Lawrence and Maroney began their property hunt around NYC.

The Couple’s Happy Family With Kids

Amid their property hunt, Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney announced in September 2021 that they were expecting their first child. Meanwhile, heavily pregnant Lawrence was seen with Maroney and a real estate agent in NYC in December 2021. Thereafter, as per Elle, the actress sold her penthouse in Manhattan for $9.9M although it was originally listed for $15.45M.

From there, she moved to a property in the West Village in a brand new townhouse that sold for $22M. Throughout her pregnancy, Lawrence spent most of her time on the East Coast of the US and scanned through properties, as they were on the verge of expanding their family. Thereafter, in February 2022, Lawrence gave birth to their son Cy and we’re soon spotted making public appearances with their baby in a stroller, in April 2022.

Further, in June 2022 the couple was spotted looking for new property in Bel-Air. Unfortunately, despite being years into their property search, the couple has yet to find their dream home for their son to grow up in. Therefore, as per DailyMail, the couple was spotted hunting for a home again, in January 2024, in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, although Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney might struggle to find their desirable humble abode, the couple are thriving in their marriage. So much so that a source even told ET about the couple’s plan to have “another kid and expand their family”. To corroborate the news, Lawrence and Maroney’s reps told Vogue in October 2024 that they’re indeed expecting their second child.
