Two firefighters suffered minor injuries rescuing a man from the Quinnipiac River on Sunday night.
Crews responded to East Grand Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. on a report of someone jumping off the Grand Avenue Swing Bridge and into the river, according to Dan Coughlin, assistant chief of the New Haven Fire Department.
The man was carried about ¼ of a mile down the river before crews “luckily spotted his head just above the water line,” Coughlin said. The man was rescued by Marine Unit 3.
According to Coughlin, he was conscious and alert and was taken to an area hospital.
Coughlin said two firefighters suffered minor injuries during the rescue. They cut their hands on jagged shells and rocks on the river bank.
The firefighters were treated at an area hospital and were released. Coughlin said they are both “doing well.”
