CT man accused of brandishing handgun during shoplifting incident

A man faces charges for allegedly brandishing a handgun during a shoplifting incident in East Haven earlier this month.

Daniel Mills, 33, of Middletown was arrested last Friday on charges of first-degree threatening and sixth-degree larceny, according to Capt. Joseph M. Murgo of the East Haven Police Department.

Murgo said the charges stem from an incident reported on Oct. 11 at Home Depot, at 75 Frontage Road. Officers responded to the store just before 7:45 p.m. on the report of a shoplifting that escalated into an incident involving a firearm.

According to Murgo, a man who was later identified as Mills tried leaving the store with merchandise without paying and was confronted by a loss prevention employee. Mills allegedly then took out a handgun and left the area in a white work van, Murgo said.

No injuries were reported.

Murgo said detectives were able to identify Mills during the investigation by reviewing video surveillance and transaction records. They later obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Mills was held on a $250,000 bond and is expected to appear in New Haven Superior Court on Oct. 30, Murgo said.
