Jon Cryer spent twelve seasons as Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men, one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. The series started in 2003 with Cryer and Charlie Sheen playing the lead roles. However, Sheen was unceremoniously fired from the sitcom after eight seasons.
Despite Sheen’s exit, Cryer remained a lead on the sitcom for four more seasons with Ashton Kutcher replacing the former. On X (formerly Twitter), politician Matt Gaetz claimed that the show’s success was mostly because of Sheen’s brilliant performance as Charlie Harper.
Cryer hit back at Gaetz’s claim, arguing that the series lasted four more seasons without Sheen. Moreover, Cryer also won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2012. As a result, Cryer strongly refuted the sentiment that the series’ success was only due to Sheen.
Cryer stated the above in a follow-up tweet, clarifying that he did not mean to discredit Sheen for his contribution to the series. Moreover, the actor admitted that Sheen was a major reason behind the show’s success. However, he argued that Sheen wasn’t the only reason for its popularity.
While critical reception of the series dwindled after Sheen’s exit, the decline was partly due to the poor writing. Nonetheless, Cryer made good work of whatever he was offered, and the show managed to draw in over 10 million viewers even during its twilight. Therefore, it is safe to say that Cryer made a strong case that Sheen did not carry the series alone.
