In the world of online multiplayer games, particularly first-person shooters, cheaters have long been the bane of honest players’ existence. And Activision, the powerhouse behind the Call of Duty franchise, has been waging a relentless war against these digital ne’er-do-wells, with their RICOCHET anti-cheat system leading the charge.
But as with any good battle, the tides can turn in unexpected ways.
Recently, Activision found itself in hot water when RICOCHET mistakenly banned a number of legitimate players. While the company was quick to reverse these bans and restore affected accounts, the incident left many gamers questioning the effectiveness of their anti-cheat measures.
Now, as Black Ops 6 looms on the horizon, Activision is pulling out the big guns—or should we say, the big algorithms?
AI: The New Sheriff in Town?
In a recent “Progress Report” blog post, Activision’s #TeamRICOCHET unveiled its latest weapon in the fight against cheaters: Artificial Intelligence. The company boasts that this new AI-powered system will be able to identify and ban cheaters within a mere hour of their first match.
It’s an ambitious goal, to be sure, but one that ought to raise more than a few eyebrows in the CoDmunity:

The idea is to use player behavior as a digital fingerprint, analyzing everything from movement patterns to aim accuracy. By comparing this data to known cheaters and pro players alike, the AI hopes to separate the wheat from the chaff—or in this case, the legit players from the hackers.
But here’s where things get a bit… shall we say, glitchy. As any Call of Duty veteran knows, sometimes the line between skill and cheating can sometimes be blurrier than a sniper’s scope in a sandstorm. How can an AI, no matter how advanced, tell the difference between a pro player’s godlike reflexes and a well-disguised aimbot?
The Catch: When AI Meets Human Unpredictability
While Activision‘s commitment to fair play is commendable, the use of AI in anti-cheat systems is not without its risks. We’ve already seen what can happen when these systems misfire, with the recent ban wave affecting innocent players. Now, imagine that same scenario, but with an AI calling the shots at lightning speed.
Cheat developers can’t hide player behavior. How people play – the legit, the phony, the good, and the bad – gives us information and we use that to build ways to pick those bad folks out of a lineup.
It’s a noble goal, but one that fails to account for the sheer unpredictability of human behavior. What happens when a player has an exceptionally good day and starts playing well above their usual skill level? Will the AI flag them as a potential cheater? And what about those rare moments of gaming brilliance that even surprise the players themselves?
The potential for false positives is a concern that can’t be ignored. After all, being wrongly accused of cheating is no laughing matter, especially for streamers and content creators whose livelihoods depend on their gaming reputations.
As we approach the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, only time will tell if Activision’s AI-powered anti-cheat system will be a game-changer or just another glitch in the matrix. One thing’s for sure—the battle against cheaters is far from over, and it’s about to get a whole lot more interesting.
