What the Cast of “Modern Family” Is Doing Right Now?

For more than a decade, the cast of Modern Family entertained fans with their shenanigans. Featuring a dysfunctional family that was relatable to the max, the ABC sitcom saw the story of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker family and their lives in LA. The show won several Primetime Emmys during its run, including Outstanding Comedy Series five times.

It has been four years since the final episode of the sitcom aired and fans have definitely missed the family a lot. Many child actors grew up with the show and have gone on to graduate in their careers. The adults have since gone on to work on several other projects. Here is an update on all the main cast members of Modern Family.

Ed O’Neill – Jay Pritchett

The patriarch of the Pritchett family, Ed O’Neill is known for his disdain for Phil, his hyper-masculine personality, and his gradual growth into a loving father for Manny. O’Neill’s Jay Pritchett is the father of Claire and Mitchell and is the richest of the lot. His marriage to Sofia Vergara’s Gloria and their age-gap become the butt of the joke for most of the series.

O’Neill won the SAG award with the rest of the cast of Modern Family for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series four times. He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy three times for his role as Jay Pritchett. Ed O’Neill was best known for his role as Al Bundy in the sitcom Married…with Children. He played the role for eleven seasons.

The actor has only had a few appearances since the end of Modern Family. He featured in the miniseries Clipped and in 2020, featured in the film The Last Shift. He is known for his voice role in the animated films Wreck-it Ralph and Finding Dory.

Sofía Vergara – Gloria Delgado-Pritchett

Much like Sofía Vergara herself, Gloria was a Colombian immigrant who made a life for herself in the USA. Gloria keeps her Colombian roots (and accent) despite years of being married to Jay Pritchett. Vergara won the SAG Award with the rest of the cast while she was nominated for the Emmys and Golden Globed for her role in the show.

Vergara is arguably the most successful of the cast, with appearances in America’s Got Talent and in films like Chef, Hot Pursuit, The Smurfs, and more. She received her fifth Emmy nominated for her recent role in Netflix’s Griselda, in which she also served as an executive producer.

Last November, Vergara even hosted the cast’s ‘first reunion’ since the show ended. According to People, Vergara mentioned that they had not seen each other together since the show ended as they had completed filming two weeks before the pandemic.

Rico Rodriguez – Manny Delgado

The old soul epitome of sophistication in the family, Manny Delgado was played by Rico Rodriguez in Modern Family. The son of Gloria from a previous marriage, Manny learns early to be a romantic but his efforts end in vain. Rodriguez had previously played roles in Epic Movie, iCarly, and ER before his breakthrough in the sitcom.

Rico Rodriguez has since featured in multiple films and TV shows, even while he was on Modern Family. The actor played himself in The Muppets and had a starring role in the coming-of-age film Endgame. After Modern Family, Rodriguez appeared on the Nickelodeon reality TV shows Unfiltered and The Substitute.

Ty Burrell – Phil Dunphy

Ty Burrell’s Phil Dunphy is probably the most beloved character in the show. The head of the Dunphy clan is goofy, tech-savvy, confident, and an all-around superstar when it comes to raising his kids along with Julie Bowen’s Claire. Burell won the Emmy twice for his performance and was nominated six more times.

Since his time on Modern Family, Burrell created and starred in the web series Boondoggle, which was reportedly based on his own life. He also starred in the animated sitcom Duncanville. The actor mentioned to Haute Living that he was considering stepping away from acting altogether.

I think I’m not really willing to travel very much anymore or miss too many dinners away from my kids. [So] there’s a possibility that I may step away from performing altogether when the show is over.

Burrell has also been involved in charity work even before Modern Family ended.

Julie Bowen – Claire Dunphy

Julie Bowen absolutely killed it as the perpetually stressed and annoyed Claire Dunphy. The actress won the Emmy twice for her role and has been nominated multiple times. She also won the SAG along with the rest of the cast for Outstanding Ensemble. Bowen has been in multiple films like Happy Gilmore and Horrible Bosses even before her role in the show.

Since 2020, Bowen has been quite busy. The actress reunited with Adam Sandler in Hubie Halloween and then went on to appear in the coming-of-age films Mixtape and The Fallout. She will be seen in the upcoming TV series Hysteria! She will also reprise her role in the upcoming Happy Gilmore sequel (via THR).

Sarah Hyland – Haley Dunphy

She has since been in the limelight for her personal life and professional work.

Hyland hosted Play-Doh: Squished as well as the reality show Love Island USA for one season. She also starred in the musical TV series Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin. Hyland got married to radio personality Wells Adams after delaying their wedding for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ceremony was attended by many of her Modern Family co-stars (via The Independent).

Ariel Winter – Alex Dunphy

Playing the Dunphy clan’s middle daughter Alex, actress Ariel Winter grew up on the show like the rest of her child co-stars. Before her time on Modern Family, Winter had already been in films like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Speed Racer, and more. She is also the sister of Shanelle and Jimmy Workman.

Ariel Winter reportedly had a troubled childhood and was stuck in a custody battle between her sister Workman and their mother. BBC News reported that her mother was accused of physically and emotionally abusing her. She was legally emancipated from her mother at the age of 17 (via People). Winter has been featured in the animated shows Star Trek: Lower Decks and Sofia the First: Royal Magic since her time on Modern Family.

Nolan Gould – Luke Dunphy

Nolan Gould became a household name when he starred as Luke Dunphy in Modern Family. The dumb yet loveable member of the family reportedly actually has an IQ of 150. He won the SAG award for the show along with the rest of his castmates.

Since the show ended in 2020, Gould has appeared in two films, Miranda’s Victim and the upcoming The Nana Project. He has also appeared in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy and Celebrity Dating Game.

Eric Stonestreet – Cameron Tucker

Eric Stonstreet’s Cameron single-handedly provided most of the drama in the show. Playing the music-obsessed football coach, Stonestreet became one of the beloved characters in the show. He has since hosted the game show, Domino Masters on Fox TV. He has also joined his on-screen niece Ariel Winter in the show Sofia the First.

Jess Tyler Ferguson – Mitchell Pritchett

Tyler Ferguson has since been featured in the film Cocaine Bear and has had a prolific career on TV. He appeared on the shows The Good Fight, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and more.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons – Lily Tucker-Pritchett

Unlike other stars in Modern Family, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played Lily quite literally grew up with the series. She became the youngest actress to be nominated and win the SAG award, which she won the rest of her castmates.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons has since focused on her education and performed in her high-school productions, which were reportedly attended by her on-screen relatives (via People). She also runs a YouTube channel.
