Nintendo has already confirmed that it has a new console in development to replace the legendary Switch, although it has yet to reveal the device to its global audience.
Nintendo Switch 2 is one of the most anticipated handhelds of the decade. While Nintendo has yet to showcase Switch 2 or whatever it ends up being called, a new report makes it clear that the company must focus on bringing more female leads to the console’s future games.
Over Half of Nintendo Switch Owners Are Females!
The original Nintendo Switch is one of the most successful consoles. Ever since its launch back in 2017, it has quickly risen up as the second best-selling console of all time, contrary to what many would’ve expected. In no small part, this massive achievement can be traced to an abundance of first-party Nintendo games.
Nintendo Switch followed the classic Nintendo console path, breaking records while doing something unexpected at the same time. A recent report suggests that nearly 52% of its owners in the USA are female gamers. There have been significant discussions concerning female gamers and their role in the industry, from work to playing, and evidently, they play even more than Sims 4.
It’s not just limited to the USA; another report suggests that 47% of the people who have a Switch in the UK are female as well. The Switch has sold millions of units in both places, debunking the myth that female gamers are a minority in the industry.
Thanks to Nintendo’s constant innovations, the Japanese company has managed to capture a demographic that’s been completely missed by other console manufacturers. It has established itself as the handheld with the highest number of female gamers, ensuring no one is left behind in the gaming industry.
However, it’s time for Nintendo to carry this momentum with the upcoming Switch 2, and an incredible way to do that is by bringing female leads into its well-known IPs.
Nintendo barely has any female leads when we compare them to male protagonists. Sure, we do have iconic characters such as Princess Zelda and Samus Aran, but they don’t have the presence Mario or Link bring to the scene.
If the Japanese company manages to craft games with more female leads, it could help Nintendo Switch 2 repeat the success of the original console and attract even more female players.
In today’s world of gaming, representation plays a key role, and by developing strong and relatable female characters, Nintendo can go a long way in tapping further into the demographic.
When is Nintendo Switch 2 Coming Out?
It’s been months at this point, and players can’t help but wonder when Nintendo will announce its follow-up to the Switch console. Back in May, the company’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, stated that Switch 2 would be announced before the end of the current fiscal year next March.
After that, the company hasn’t uttered a word about the Switch successor, with a further comment from Furukawa suggesting that it won’t hit the shelves before April 2025 at the earliest. Some in the community believe that the system will debut as early as March 3, 2025, since it’s a date that coincides with the eighth anniversary of the first Switch.
However, Blade’s CEO, Ruben Mercado, believes that the upcoming Switch successor is already finished, and his company has access to the final console. Blade is a company that officially sells peripherals for a range of gaming consoles, including Switch.
Mercado further claims that Switch 2’s release date will come down to the Japanese company’s financials for the year, and if things head in the right direction, we could see the system drop before April.
Since Blade is a real peripheral company, Mercado’s claims regarding the release of Switch 2 do have some weight behind them. However, it’s crucial to take this with a grain of salt until the Japanese company officially announces something.
