NFL Monday night: Ravens’ Derrick Henry breaks another long run

The NFL leader in rushing attempts, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, Baltimore running back Derrick Henry had 35 yards on six carries when the Ravens started their third possession of the second half with 4:58 left in the third quarter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.

When Henry scored with 6:32 left to play, the former Alabama All-American had pushed his totals to 169 yards on 15 carries as Baltimore defeated the Buccaneers 41-31 for the Ravens’ fifth consecutive victory.

In the NFL’s other Monday night game, the Arizona Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 17-15 on Chad Ryland’s 32-yard field goal on the final snap of the game.

Henry got his surge started with an 81-yard run to Tampa Bay’s 11-yard line. According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Henry reached a top speed of 21.72 mph on the run – the fifth-fastest recorded by an NFL ball-carrier this season. But Bucs cornerback Zyon McCollum got up to 21.85 mph to save a touchdown.

Monday night’s big gainer was the fourth run of at least 80 yards for Henry in NFL regular-season play:

· Henry became the second player in NFL history with a 99-yard run from scrimmage in the Tennessee Titans’ 30-9 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Dec. 6, 2018.

· Henry ran 94 yards for a touchdown in the Titans’ 42-36 victory over the Houston Texans on Oct. 18, 2020.

· Henry ran 87 yards for a touchdown in the Ravens’ 35-10 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 29.

But for all his rushing yards, Henry scored on a 13-yard reception – the last of the five touchdown passes that Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson threw in the game. Jackson completed 17-of-22 passes for 281 yards with no interceptions.

Henry recorded the 21st game in NFL history in which a player ran for at least 150 yards, but scored on a reception and not a run.

The TD reception made Henry the seventh player in NFL history with a streak of at least seven seasons with 10 or more touchdowns in each.

Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 31-of-45 passes for 370 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. The Bucs lost wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to injuries during the game.
