The CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship football game will be played at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach on Nov. 29.
CIF-SS assistant commissioner and spokesman Thom Simmons said availability and seating requirements were the chief reasons why the Division 1 final is at Veterans Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 11,600.
The Southern Section constitution, Simmons pointed out, requires that equal seating capacity must be available to both participating schools in playoff games. That eliminated stadiums at Mt. San Antonio College and Saddleback College as football final sites.
Simmons said with USC and UCLA having home football games on Nov. 30 that the Coliseum and Rose Bowl are unavailable.
As for SoFi Stadium which has been the site for football games involving Mission Viejo and Servite this season, Simmons said: “With playing at SoFi, trying to do revenue sharing with the participating teams makes that unfeasible at this time. We hope that can happen as we continue talks with them.”
The Division 1 final was played at the Coliseum last year and the Rose Bowl in 2022. In 2021, the Division 1 finalists played at Veterans Stadium.
