Two juveniles in custody in connection with fatal shooting in Windsor

Two juveniles are in custody in connection with a fatal shooting in Windsor on Tuesday.

Officers responded to a residence at 525 Bloomfield Ave. shortly after 1 p.m. when someone at the residence called 911 to report a domestic incident and hung up after giving minimal information, according to Lt. Nicholas Dally of the Windsor Police Department. Dispatchers tried calling back but could not get an answer.

Dally said an officer responding to the home heard what appeared to be gunshots as he got close to the residence. He then saw a male and a female rushing toward a blue Honda Accord that was parked at the base of the driveway and a male lying in the driveway, according to Dally.

The officer pursued the Honda and tried to pull it over when it sped off, but he lost sight of it shortly thereafter.

Additional officers who responded to the home tended to the man who was on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. They performed lifesaving efforts on the man before he was taken to Hartford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Dally said. The victim has not been identified.

Windsor police disseminated information about the fleeing vehicle to police departments in the area. Shortly thereafter, the Bloomfield Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a crash at the intersection of East Wintonbury Avenue and Barry Circle.

When officers responded to the crash they found that the vehicle was abandoned and that the occupants had fled the area. Investigators in Windsor confirmed it was the vehicle that took off from the shooting.

Police established a perimeter around the crash area and were assisted by the regional drone team, K-9 units and Connecticut State Police during the search, according to Dally. The suspects could not be found.

Shortly before 11 p.m., Dally said both suspects were found on New Park Avenue in West Hartford. They were taken into custody with the assistance of the West Hartford Police Department.

Dally said the identity of both suspects cannot be released because they are juveniles. It was not immediately clear if they had been charged in connection with the shooting.

“The Windsor Police Department assures the public that there is no further threat to our community, as both suspects are now in custody,” Dally said in a statement. “Additional patrols may be seen in the area as part of ongoing investigation.”

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Windsor Police Department at 860-688-5273.
